Because the Ipad 4 is really an Ipad 3S.

Actually it doesn't even qualify as an "S".

More like an Ipad 3+.

Apple is trying to drive a stake through Microsoft's WinRT heart by releasing a "new model" at the same time as they are rolling out a new tablet platform.

Smart move from a marketing standpoint. People here should be smart enough to realize that the iPad 3->Ipad 4 isn't more then a slight incremental change. Not even an evolutionary improvement.

Selling the Ipad 3 and the Ipad4 at the same time would be stupid, since it costs the same to manufacture the 4 as the 3, and any lower price on the 3 would just cut directly into their profit margin.

Yawn. Nothing to see here. Keep your ipad 3, and wait until the Ipad 4S gets released in March. That will add another 1GB of RAM and some more pixel dust, and will be worth paying to upgrade. not.

I heard its because Apple didn't like when the iPad 3 was referred to as i3 . it looked to much like the unlucky number 13 .

What basis do you have to say this ? Please dont push your theory down our throat ! Rubbish is that !

My iPad 3 stutters badly in the advanced stages on Zen Pinball (doesn't do it on my Nexus 7). I would bet that the game would be silky smooth on the iPad 4. So I support the posters who say the iPad 3 is under powered for retina.

I don't understand why this is difficult for people.

Apple have spec bumped the new iPad (3rd Generation) and named it the iPad 4th Generation.

Same weight, same height, same panel technology, etc.

New front camera, Lightning port, and new CPU/GPU chipset.

People look at the iPad 3 as being discontinued, but it merely lives on in another form via the 4th Generation. People also ask why they no longer sell the 3 but sell the 2. Again, not rocket science, why would Apple offer the 3 for $100 less than the 4 with a Retina Display? Apple want the Retina Display to be a compelling reason to go for the top model, and having a secondary model which also sported a Retina Display would have, in a way, eaten into the sales of the top model.

The iPad 2, non Retina Display, at $100 less gives people the full size iPad experience minus the sharper display, and is on par spec wise with the iPad Mini.

A line up of Mini, 3, and 4 would have been ridiculous.

Mini - Non Retina - Retina is the ideal line up, and there is no place for two Retina Devices (in the full size line up) as of yet.

Its not a theory its a Fact that the iPad 3 has worse graphics for games because of the Retina Display.

See some of the graphics were toned down on the 3 because it had a retina display. The retina display took more graphic and processing power then the 3 had.

So some games on the 2 have better graphics then the 3 because the processor and graphics were bogged down on the 3 because of Retina.

The tablet would run smooth sure, but only because they lowered down what graphics would display on the 3 for games. If they had not done that then you would notice the FPS drops.

But this problem is solved with the 4.

Because they have doubled the processing and graphic power from the three to the four.

So the iPad wont have the graphic limitations that it had when it switched from the 2 to the 3 - IE: from non retina to retina.

Nobody expects you to notice.

Because the graphics were toned down so that you wouldn't. And for the most part it was only a problem with gaming, Because when your gaming your using the device to the fullest.

I don't have any problems with mine since I don't use the iPad for gaming. For me the iPad is a business tool and works great. For gaming I use an Xbox 360 or a Play Station 3.

Reason for discontinue: Sales NOT good and cannot match APPL expectations

Need to do some minor upgrade for the Christmas season.. if not...

But I wonder why anyone would buy the 2 with lousy cameras, no LTE, no Lightning, etc? The iPad 4 is a much better deal for only a $100 more. If you don't need the extra power and Retina, than the Mini is a better deal because of the nicer camera and LTE.

People here just pick up my comment and don't look at what context was I was saying that...This comment was in response to one of the post where the guy said iPad-4 had better Retina Display then iPad-3 and that is why he thinks iPad-4 is smooth. Of course the performance would be better on the iPad-4 because of a better processor. It is a No Brainer !!

What's the iPad 3? I've never heard of such a device.
Are you serious when you say that you haven't heard of the "iPad 3" or are you simply trolling because of the unofficial nickname for the "New iPad with Retina Display"?

If the former, get out of your parent's basement more often, if the latter then simply get out. :p

Should I change my iPad 4 to New iPad with Retina Display then? :D

Just pointing out there is not such thing as the iPad 3. When you realize that, the OPs question answers it self. Please cease with the insults. Thanks.

But when everyone knows with iPad-3 it surely means the new iPad is there a reason for the OP to talk like such a whatever. It is the context what matters then being absolutely perfect with the terminology !! why did he have to point out what iPad-3 and what the new iPad is so sarcastically ! It is not insult it is common sense !

Wanna try that again? Maybe in English? I have no idea what you're trying to say. Good luck.

Maybe I just had bad luck but I have 2 ipad3's which are very sluggish and slow. In particular when loading up graphics intensive web pages. It takes a while for the graphics to load up, text loads up right away, what's worse when scrolling down it has to load those graphics then I sit there waiting every time I scroll down. I have an old ipad2 we use for the baby and it scrolls and loads graphics pretty smoothly putting them side by side, gah my baby has a better ipad than I do!

This is always something that bothered and frustrated me to no end. That and the wifi issues, but I had those with my ipad2 as well.

Never Mind, with your earlier comment also I already got a feeling you perhaps dont easily get and understand what others are saying so never mind you can pass. IQ can vary from person to person I agree ! ;)

All i know is i'm perfectly happy with my iPad 3 and i only bought mine 2 months ago. Not fussed about lightening and the A5X is perfectly fast enough for me.

Just because it's no longer the latest does not mean it's suddenly useless.

I bought an iPad 3 yesterday in mint shape for 350. Could not see putting out 533 for the differences.

I bought one (after amazon credit) for $201. I can't see me getting an iPad 4th generation. The mini, on the other hand, I might have to think about.

The iPad 2 is an iPad with no Retina.

The iPad 3 was an iPad with Retina but had problems because its components were too weak

And the iPad 4 is an iPad with Retina that has upgraded components so the Device is now balanced.

That is why apple Discontinued iPad 3

Because they have a Retina Display iPad that works better then the 3 now.

So they have a Cheap option iPad and a better quality more Expensive option aswell.

^ THAT

the iPad 4 with A6X is what the iPad 3 should have been. the A5X did not maintain the level of fluidity while gaming that the iPad 2 did, solely because the Retina screen was resource beast which didn't leave much left over to render motion in graphically intensive apps such as Metal Storm.

luckily i fell within Apple's 30 day unofficial return period and upgraded to the iPad 4. i will be roughly a month without an iPad but it's worth it to me to get the A6X and return to the fluidity that i used to have with my iPad 2 before i gave it to a family member.

good riddance A5X
