Hi, I have Windows running at 3584x2240 on the MBP 16" screen. With increased in font size at 200%, the screen is beautiful and the extra screen estate is nice. It shows that the LCD is capable of higher resolutions. Why Mac OS has no such higher resolution option? I used EasyRes to set the resolution to 4K in the past but for using about 1-2 days, I got really bad headache. Not sure if it was the app problem.

The MBP 16” native resolution is only 3072x1920. Windows appears to be lying to you.

Does Windows use some kind of software scaling for the seemingly increased resolutions? Are MacOS apps like the EasyRes doing the same thing?

No idea - but if they are reporting a resolution higher than the native resolution, then it would seem so.

I don't know about display technology well but those super big NEC Multisync 5FG 17" CRT monitors made many many years ago were able to produce nice looking text at different resolutions from native resolutions. Perhaps Windows and apps like EasyRes made use of multi sync of the LCD in MBP 16"?

Is the developer of EasyRes here?

multi sync is a CRT concept that doesn’t apply to LCDs. It‘s always possible to simulate higher resolutions on LCDs, but this happens by dropping pixels and reducing quality.

CRT's don't have native resolutions. CRT's have dot pitch. If you can shift the data out to them fast enough, and it can shift the data to the screen fast enough, and the dot pitch allows for it, you can run all sorts of resolutions. They're analog.

An LCD is like a screen door. it doesn't matter what you are looking at THROUGH the screen door, it is always the resolution of the screen door.
