Why Apple Mail default? Change to AOL?

I am having problems contacting various companies with email. As I search the web and have a question, to various companies, they will have a link titled "contact us". When I click apple mail opens. I use aol and I have not set up an account with apple.

Can I change my default settings to aol?

or

Should I set an account with apple mail.

Go into mail and then preferences. Then the general tab. Change the default email reader to something else.

Apple's Mail program works with most email systems. I use Mail with my GMail account, you don't need a .mac account to use Mail.

Is AOL a POP system? Because if it is you can use Mail with it.

AOL can be used with IMAP settings. Heres the settings to add to mail:
