The 4S is $1049 factory unlocked in New Zealand...

And that is the 16GB? Now that's staggering. And the price is in NZD?
Assuming it is .. it's still $840ish on US$ .. that's crap for a 16GB iPhone.

iPod touch bill of materials ~150$
iPhone 4 bill of materials ~190$

You can extrapolate iPhone4's price for the 4s. 3G receiver, better camera, flash ,etc doesn't cost too much to add.

You are forgetting a lot here. One: licensing. It costs Apple extra money just to put 3G in a device. They have to pay licenses and also... they have to pay to governments for the use of this wireless technology.

Furthermore, assembly. The iPhone 4 is harder to put together than an iPod touch and is thus more expensive.

R&D and advertising are much higher for iPhone than iPod touch.

Especially R&D is extremely high. Remember Siri? That was not cheap to built-in to the iPhone. They want to earn all of that money back.

Also, Apple sometimes buys companies or technology from companies: this can cost up to hundreds of millions of dollars.

Sure .. I can understand those tidbits cost, and for what it offers, unlocked iPhone is OK for the retail price. But not everything on iPhone is worth as it should too. Just like I mentioned earlier, $100 increments for each capacity upgrade (16GB --> 32GB and 32GB --> 64GB) is way way too much. Should've cost no more than, say ... $50. There goes your Apple Tax :p

And in some countries, like China, official iPhone still cost nearly US$1000 and that's the 16GB model. Now who's to blame for that, right?

The iPod is a LOT more than an iPod now. Its marketed by Apple themselves as a gaming device.

I'll believe this when Apple finally comes out with a gaming controller accessory, till then it's nothing but a kid's toy for gaming ;)

Apple doesn't have to, third-party manufacturers will take care of that for them.

Same thing I was saying, PLUS all developers need to build this capacity into their games as well. Until then the iPhone / iPod touch are nothing more than kid's toy's when it comes to gaming ;)

Agreed ... if Apple really want to rape Sony and Microsoft on gaming world, they really should make physical controller. On screen is horrible, decrease real estate, and yes .. many are kid's toy, edugame, light games, so so games like Angry Birds something.

I want some real deal like Heavy Rain, Uncharted, God of War, Metal Gear ...
Oh, wait ...

Apple doesn't have to, third-party manufacturers will take care of that for them.

Really? .. third party game controller or accessories will never feel the same compared to the original. Won't work on some games, glitches, bugs, awkward buttons and all. See what happens with Playstation third party controller after a few decades, the original controller still the best all around. Always work as it should.

Even simple thing like iPod/iPhone dock works that way, I only use the original Apple dock no matter what, it works for years now, when third party speaker dock with tinny sounds and EXPENSIVE will stop works at some time. Apple could just do something in there and kaboom .. speaker dead, not functioning, not charging etc etc.

I'm not sure why the gap is that large where you're from...the gap is explained by what everyone else has said before. The base iPhone here is $650, while the base iPod touch (which has 8gb less memory) is $200

a fairer comparison would be the $300 32gb touch vs the $750 32gb iPhone...a $450 difference.

USD vs NZD is obviously not the same, but the $790 difference is equivalent to $625 here...a bit more than the actual $450 difference

It does cost more but not so much that it warrants 400$ more pricetag than iPhones. Unlocked iPhones are a rip off, it hurts the carriers only since most people go for the 2 year contracts, that why Apple prices the iPhone at a high pricetag.

Excuse me but,
Siri costs millions of dolars to develop and buy.
Not to mention apple has large bills to pay. (employees, legal, etc)
Do you think features like notification centre, multitasking, siri, dual antenna all magically develop?
No, and those who do make them get paid some of the phone cost .

The $649 USD price for unlocked 16GB doesn't include tax does it?

Well the $1050 NZD price for unlocked 16GB in NZ does. Tax of 15%. If you take away 15% of the $1050 price you get $892.50 NZD.

$649 USD = $818 NZD.

G-Mo beat me to it.

The high price must have something to do with it being a phone... Because the iPad costs only $800 NZD and that's 16GB with a much larger screen and I think it has a more powerful processor too.

You broke it down better!!

I believe all the high end phones (including iphone and high end android phones) are overpriced compare to the cost because they can charge that much at the moment. I believe Ipad cost way more to make and it is cheaper.

If you think 3g and the radio chips costs a lot. I just bought a LG optimus one on Boxing day in Canada, and the whole phone cost just $60 without contract, which includes a touch screen, 3G, GPS, camera, an android OS, a prepaid sim card with extra $20 credit etc. and hardware spec. wise it is close to an iphone 3GS. Even at regular price, it is like $90.

You obviously have no clue of how Apple collectively has saved up 70 billion dollars of wealth.

long time ago, apple realised they cldnt beat the other major players, so they marketed themselve as a luxury item. a niche market for the rich.

they still play this tactic. but now they're open to the idea of trying to dominate the respective markets. they have older models that r cheaper.
so if u cant afford them or complain its too expensive, there are free/cheaper models out there.

so are u complaining that iphones are much more expensive? when u can get a 3gs on contract for almost free? compared to an ipod.

its also good to take note that an ipod has no/poor resales value. u can trade in your phone for some money back to your carrier (if one is lazy to find a buyer for your phone), and i read an article that iphone has a resale value of 120% on first purchase.

I'm not complaining that they're too expensive, or that I can't afford. I can afford an iPhone (I have one) and it was worth the money. I was simply wondering why the price difference between the iPod Touch and the iPhone was so great.

i think someone mentioned it earlier in the thread, cause they can and people will still buy it.
the ipod touch was also the byproduct of the iphone. and cause there's more value in the iphone than the ipod touch.

ipod touch sales is also not going well as expected, so it wont be around for too long, i guess.

Here in New Zealand iPod Touches are more common the iPhones, because of the lower price. There are a lot of people at school that have an iPod Touch and a ****** $80 cellphone, because its an affordable way to have the smartphone experience without having to dish out the $$$ for a smartphone upfront or pay an expensive monthly fee for a subsidized one.

I reckon the iPod Touch sales are strong, but the fact that is costs 25% of what an iPhone costs means Apple won't make nearly as much money on it.

ipod touch sales is growing strong, but compared to what?
the entire ipod sales is dwindling, releasing new ipod series isnt working, and about a whooping 20% decline from last year.

sure, apple still holds a dominant share in the mp3 player shares. they will still release ipods, until they find it unprofitable?. i did remember reading some article about apple wanting to replace the ipods with a generic (3g-like model) iphone series, but dont me up to that.

Yeah thats because since the rise of the smartphone people don't need stand alone media players much anymore.

From my experience and not just from articles, I disagree.

When I sold my 3rd 32GB Gen iPod touch for the then upcoming 4th, I sold it for $375 NZD. The new 4th cost me $470 NZD. So I used the iPod for almost a year for only $95 NZD. Not bad if you ask me. ;)

Even with a lot more internals than iPod Touch, 3x price is too much. It should've been $499, $599, $699 for 16GB, 32GB and 64GB respectively (including R&D, marketing, etc). Even though they're overpriced, Apple is barely able to keep up with the demand:rolleyes:

Yep, which means they aint' going to bring it down anytime soon.

Most people aren't pay those prices for the iPhone though. The MSRP on almost every modern Android smartphone is higher than that as well... That phone retails for the same price as the 4S unlocked... so I wouldn't be so quick to say that Apple is ripping us off. :D
