I can't think of an example of a car that only has CarPlay on premium models. I bought the entry level A4 quattro BECAUSE it had CarPlay and I didn't need to buy Nav

Hyundai has CarPlay available on lower models that do not have factory nav.

Back to topic - wireless. Takes a while and $ for car companies to make any changes. I wouldn't want it I want my phone to be charging it if I'm using it like that

Yes and standards for wireless charging that all phones will support otherwise doubt car manufactures would support. Add 5 years after that and you might see it all.

It's getting so that my car is almost my primary iPhone charging station. I don't mind a wired connection.
Isn't that bad for your battery? I've always thought charging your battery is way better using the original Apple chargers.
On top of that: does it 'harm' the battery when you let it charge when it's hit 100%?

I don't think @Julien was saying so much it had to be a premium model so much as it often is part of some premium (add on) package. BMW is really bad about this. If you want CarPlay ($300) it requires a $1,700 navigation option or a $2,700 "premium package". Total gouge.

So is Audi, In many regions you have to have their nav offering before you can order CarPlay - and I get why.

I don't care about wired vs wireless, when is CarPlay not going to suck?
It's extremely poor and has next to no apps. I've completely given up on it as it's not even close to the manufactures inbuilt systems.

I'd guess (but don't know) it was aimed at the lower end of the market where manufactures don't invest or spend much in terms of effort on the informatics. In the premium brands the manufactures all have much better systems from the get go.

I have a Hyundai now, but my previous car was an Infiniti, and my wife drives an Acura.

CarPlay and android auto are much more user friendly than any of the factory systems I’ve ever used.

The fact that I can search for a location on my phone before getting in the car, and then connect my phone to the car, and the location I just searched for is there already is the best feature ever in car navigation.

Guess you've not used any of the newer systems in the German cars.
idrive or Audis MMi with the digital cockpit?

I don't even need to worry about the phone. I can just use google maps on my mac or iPad and send it to the car so it's ready for me when I get in. Warn me about speed cameras on route and as I approach, some other benifits are better voice to text/commands. Better phone support allowing multiple connections to phones, better built-in apps. Hell I can even have the Audi MMI read me the RSS feeds from this site while I drive. Apples carplay looks and feels 5 years behind both BMW and Audi. Thankfully I can disable carplay and take the beautiful graphics and well laid out system provide by Audi.

Sounds like they're moving away from it, but the knob in iDrive/AudiMMI is such a better experience than a touch screen.

I have a new Audi A4 with CarPlay, that is also wired only. In the Audi its because the Audi MMI uses the bluetooth, CarPlay is limited to only being connected to the cable. Its not that big deal anyway, your phone gets charged and you don't need to (and legally shouldn't) use the phone while driving - as everything is on the screen anyway, In a way makes more sense for the cable.

I have the new S4 and I find it faffy to use. It’s much easier pressing the Media button on the Centre console.

I have the new S4 - how do you use Google Maps (etc) to send stuff to the car?
