Why are Photos and iPhoto separate apps?

    Now that iPhoto is free, why are iOS Photos and iOS iPhoto separate apps?

    I've always felt it is confusing and unnecessary. Now even more so.

    Obviously, I'm asking for speculation here. Speculate away.

    wonder if they will merge in a future IOS release?

    I was wondering the same thing.

    Maybe iPhoto is a more advance photo editing app/program than Photos app...
    Just a guess

    Furthermore, the duplication seems to take up a lot of space, especially on ios devices.

    For the average user the Photos app is simple and works well enough, while iPhoto's extra options might be unnecessary and could confuse many people.
