Maybe I’ll just move to California. Then, at least, I will only have to stay up until midnight. Totally worth it. :)

You should just go ahead and leave the US. Then you could even order it during normal business hours. :D

Or you just set an alarm. I live on the east coast and set an alarm for 2:55am. I was asleep by 3:05
Stop, you make adulting sound too hard.

(I did the same. Set an alarm for 01:50. Went back to bed at 03:30 Central Time because I got the reservation email. It was in my inbox when I woke again at 05:30. Order completed before I left for work.)

I adulted hard. I played Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel until about 1:30 am (I'm on the east coast), waited for my girlfriend in Utah to wake up at 2:00 am (she wanted to be awake an hour before preorder), and talked to her until about 2:50 am.

I'll be 62 in December. I adulted hard. :)

All jokes aside I took the day off work (didn’t call in sick!) partly for the three day weekend and partly because otherwise I would be 20 metres underground at pre-order time (08:01am here).
I wouldn’t have had to do this if it was midnight pre-orders here.

There really is no ideal time when dealing on a global level. Noon PST would be 3AM somewhere in China as launch currently is in EST

The preorder date is 10/27, and Apple is based on the west coast. 12:01 PDT is the start of 10/27.

Video game releases are the same way. In store releases are always time zone specific.

Actually thats not true we get them at 9:01pm here in CA.

But i cant believe this is even a question. Apple is based in CA and as a bonus, server time is probably way lower than doing it in the middle of the day to appease east coast shoppers (who, IMO get way better start time for watching baseball/football, so i would gladly trade them timeslots for the phone releases any day).

I believe the author is pointing out that it would be much nicer if the preorder time was something like noon PST.
I would say that's a pretty poor time since most people will either be at work or it's the middle of the day, so Internet traffic will be high. But if we're looking at preorders opening up at the same time in different time zones, midnight Pacific is pretty reasonable since we are closer to the "end" of the day. By this time it is already morning in Europe and afternoon in Asia. If it was noon here, it'd be really crazy times during the workday in other parts of the world.

I do agree though, 3am for eastern time people its a bit nuts, especially on a weekday for normal working folks. Didnt they used to do it Friday into Saturday?

I get Apple is a global brand, but they should really roll back the times and let the US where it is based have at least decent times.

Even if they did it at 10pm PST/1am EST it would be a TON better. As you can see below, the only people that really get hosed as the east half of the North America/virgin islands and Greenland.

I dont see where moving it up 2 hours would drastically make anyone get up middle of the night; Iceland would be 5am and then 6am the earliest. Still reasonable times to get up early vs 3am.

haha wut? who knew

Because Apple is all about the customer experience :D

Seriously Apple should just have a lottery for 1st day preorder access much like it does for WWDC tix. Send one time use codes to the winners who can log in any time that day and buy the model for the lottery entered - guaranteed launch day delivery. Limit two entries per cell account. Code is tied to cell account so it can’t be sold.

I think it’s hilarious the majority of the comments here completely misunderstood what the OP was asking. Reading comprehension...

It's a phone guys lol. For you east coast people, if you can't get up at 3am, you're not a hardcore fan so you don't deserve a phone on launch day. Just get it couple weeks later or go wait in line on 11/3.

Can someone explain to me why preorders are still between 12am-3am? Isn’t the rationale for this that the most interested buyers will stay up late and get the phone earlier? How is that relevant now with phones being prordered globally all at once?

It's the perfect example of the Golden Rule. The one with the gold gets to make the rules...and this is how Apple chooses to do it.

It's always midnight somewhere. Just like it's always 3AM somewhere. It is what it is, and I don't see this changing. Not now. Not ever.
