Seriously? Saying that you're going to stop reading an annoying person's posts (and use the ignore feature to achieve that) is considered trolling?

Can the rest of us get a copy of the MacRumors dictionary where every word has a different meaning than it does elsewhere?
Think of it as a game of Mornington Crescent.

I think most would welcome the same freedom that you're allowed on FB or Twitter.

Hell, no.

You think Arn is going to trash his brand and let his advertisers, sponsors, supporters, staff and long-standing contributors and members be associated with amplifying the type of deranged, toxic content and real-world behaviour that is prevalent on these platforms?

To begin with, it's one forum that's only visible to registered users, who have every right to simply ignore it even then. Second, why would anyone not want real-world behavior on your site? For better or worse we all facing harsh realities right now and they want to express feelings of frustration but can't find the exact perfect way to do it without being penalized.

Again, let he (or she) who has NOT been penalized on this forum cast the last stone. The amount of kissing up by those who've been slapped in this thread is frankly laughable.

I wouldn't welcome it. I participate in many other sites and one thing I like about this site (PRSI in particular) is the stricter moderation. On other sites, flame-wars and personal insults go on for days. It's tiresome. PRSI is an escape for me. That may sound odd to anyone who doesn't know what political discussion is like on more lenient forums, but it's true.

Frankly I'm glad PRSI is strictly moderated as it is there is a fair amount of demeaning talk, passive aggressive behaviors and the like. While the site owners give us the ability to debate this back and forth and air our views, I don't see that type of fundamental moderation principles being changed, and for one I'm glad about it.

If one feels the need to vent their frustration in a befitting manner on harsh realities there is always reddit.

Because Facebook and Twitter are well known homes of well reasoned civil intellectual discussions and philosophical debate?
They did ban both Qanon and antifa-- both equally offensive to facebook's internal political philosophy-- which might inadvertently reveal how strange facebook's values are.

We agree on this topic. Reddit has 330 million users and is the most real community on the internet, letting the the entire user base virtually dictate what does and doesn't get seen is one of its biggest benefits.

Yeah, but most of them are teenagers and you may end up arguing with an Android user 😁

On Reddit, users can still see the worst of the worst by scrolling down far enough. MacRumors doesn't want the worst of the worst to even be part of the post content. That's is though a fundamental difference between the two platforms.

Do you trust them to filter this out?

(the definitions of "worst of the worst" that were used twenty or thirty years ago are biting us in the ass now)

But viewing them requires a deliberate act. You must scroll all the way down and expand it, otherwise it's hidden from view. Essentially, if you're downvoted off the page it's out of existence unless you want to troll, it's a sound system used by millions.

Additionally, the new version of this board software (now in beta) will have this feature, it will be interesting to see if they choose to employ it here.

This site provides user reported post functionality. So even if filtering software fails, some user may (or may not) end up reporting a wayward post.

Perhaps the best way to mold dialogue on this forum is for each user to resolve to report a few dozen posts per day. Crowd source the problem.

Seems like there's many users who already do report many posts (at least, per week) which is how the system is set up.

However that's hardly "crowd sourcing" as each report has to then be actioned upon by either a volunteer mod, or the staff (in more serious issues).

It sounds more subversive to me, by making so many post reports the staff is overwhelmed and force a change in the way moderation is conducted. It is a crowd-source issue. I think the best way to ”mold dialogue” is for each user to abide by the rules.

I have zero interest in dialogue being "voted off the page", that is mob censorship. All ideas, especially the bad ones need to be seen and discussed. I trust the mods here to clear out the things that have no place based on the rules.

I wonder if you will be so vocal about having certain users/ideas/posts/etc. removed once things important to you are on the short end of the mob stick.

I post religiously on Reddit and have some things drop off that way, trust me I have zero issues with that personally although I can see where some may. By and large, quality content gets through and crap gets voted off and yes, you're subject to mob mentality but you're also going to think twice about what you post, just as one would here.

This just comes down to who you prefer moderating the discussion, the moderators or the community. Can't blame you for a personal preference here.

Yup, the 2 sides of the coin. In the case of MR its my preference to allow them to maintain the rules thereby keeping the community in line. We all signed up and acknowledged their rules so no faction of the community can run roughshod over the rest.

Lets face it, its a tech site/forum where some topics spill over into PRSI, not the other way around so all this heavy handedness should be unnecessary, mods should be spending most of their time making sure things are on topic and that no one is blatently ignoring the rules.

One thing I find interesting about online communities is there are always incredibly small but loud factions that insist upon trying to change the rules to fit them instead of understanding that they, of their own free will, joined a community. If the rules or the overall vibe don't suit you just move on and find another that does, that's the beauty of the internet, choice! If the tone of the average conversation on MR changes and I find I am not enjoying myself anymore I will simply find another Apple site to frequent! No different than if my favorite restaurant changes the menu to something I don't like, I'll find another because it makes no sense to scream at the owners about how I don't like their changes to their restaurant. This exact example is what amuses me about vegetarians/vegans that complain about burger places that don't offer them a choice, made on a separate grill. I have nothing agaist vegetarians/vegans but seriously, just find a place to get veggie burgers instead of screaming at Five Guys! Not everyone/everyplace needs to cater to you as an individual.

Again, 2 sides of a coin, I'll just leave while others will throw tantrums. I do find it amusing that those throwing tantrums are the ones usually banned.

I no more trust us unruly proletariat to moderate us than I do my neighbors wackadoodle dog.
