Why are the so called "Superdrive" such poor quality?

Been trying for the last couple of days to figure out why my superdrive on my Imac keeps ejecting CDs upon boot up, and so far I have found out nothing, but what I did find out, was that so many people have problems with the superdrive in Imac: http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1113&start=0

Something is obviously wrong here! How can it be that such expenssive machines, have a component like a Drive of such poor quality? they are cheap to get a quality version of!

sigh... Havent even had mine Imac in a month, and have never had such severe issues. Apples customer service so far have been completely useless. Hard not to feel kinda p**sed off.
I really like the machine. Most other things have been great, but I didn't expect such... "things" to be problematic. Even if I figure out what it is(which I dont) I probably will have to wonder on when the superdrive will fail since its such poor quality... Should not have to be like that.

Hold down the "C" key then turn on the power to your Mac. This will force it to boot off of the DVD. Keep holding the key until the grey boot screen appears.

This is why there are so many hackintoshes. Two of the last three computers I've had with superdrives (iMac C2D and Mac Mini) have failed. The other one is in my 5 month old MBP and is still working (knocks on wood...).

Does not work. It can simply not see it during boot up.

Holding down options(alt) forces will not let it boot from it either(even if I insert it again).

Sorry to hear about your issues. I guess it's like anything, some people have issues, some don't. I this case, there sure do seem to be a large number of people with SUperdrive issues, but that being said, not all of them are of poor quality - take me for example, I burned literally thousands of discs on my G4 iMac over a span of 4 years and my Superdrive never acted up. My new C2D iMac's drive has been performing great as well.

If it is still under warranty I would talk to Apple.
