The places in the mall just replace whole parts and many do not do that very well. That is much different than exchanging components on the circuit board. Even Apple does not do stuff like that, they just toss it in the recycle bin.

I wouldn't bet on that. Where do you think the parts in refurbished iPhones come from? Apple wouldn't throw away several hundred dollars worth of parts just because it needs to be repaired. With the right tools and experience, it can be done.
 
Remember the old Nokia candy bar phones?

Back in the late 90's, you could have customize your Nokia to light up on every single part of the phone. Even the antenna nub. I miss the old days!

Sure it could be done but I doubt they do a lot of work on the circuit boards. I can see Apple removing a component attached to the board and maybe replacing but working on the board, itself, not believing it.

I never said they threw the boards away. They are recycled.
