I'll bet a lot (most?) of the eBay units are being sold internationally. A slightly used unit for slightly over retail plus $50 shipping is probably pretty attractive in a country where the iPad is not yet available.

Even when it does become available, the local price is often much higher than the US price. Some of this is due to VAT taxes in many of those countries. I'm not sure how the typical eBay seller/buyer deals with customs and declared values for a used item.

+1 Free market. People will pay whatever it is worth to them. Although, it would seem silly to pay more than Apple charges unless you are somewhere Apple doesn't sell iPads.
The Apple store doesn't accept PayPal... for those without a credit card (or willing to use one) ebay is the only viable option.

It's partly because of international buyers in places where they can't get the iPad from Apple, but most of the reason is that people are stupid and don't realize they are paying too much.

I am going to agree with Kevin here.

The same reason why people were buying 1yr+ old Apple TVs for about $30 less than a new one. They are idiots.

slightly used ipads are going for less than retail on ebay.co.uk.

retail is £429 and there are a few going for £400 delivered.

Which when you take into account ebay and paypal fee's, leaves the seller losing a fair amount (assuming they bought it from the UK for retail price)

I think some of you guys are underestimating the power of eBay. There are people who'll just see the iPad ads on TV and then go straight to eBay to look for it, they might not even have any idea how much it costs. The whole culture of 'bidding' has almost become an addiction, and it's very common to see products selling higher than retail prices simply because the buyers are so competitive.

I've sold things used on eBay and got higher than I paid for it new.

It's what makes eBay a great place for selling but not always for buying.

i sold my 5 month old 32GB wifi for £420 on ebay, AND it was dented slightly!

I bought a one month old pristine 64GB 3g for £525 to replace it.

good tradeup i think!

Because the ones on ebay are jailbroken and filled with illegally-obtained software. Thats why.

Been trying to sell my 64GIG 3G on Craiglist and I've lost count how many people want me to send it to Nigeria :D

Why do these scammers always use Nigeria as the shipping request !?

I've seen 16gb ones going on craigslist for 600 used! I just bought mine brand new for 549. I guess I could understand it if they were hard to find, but everywhere I've gone they seem to have plenty.

Dang, learn something every day. I bought the 64G 6 weeks ago and regretted not buying the 3G. Think I will take a shot at eBay!

People are willing to pay more because as long as the price + shipping is less than what they would pay in a retail store (remember state sales tax) then buying on ebay for a slight premium is worth it. Also, there are plenty of people who would rather pay slightly more and have it delivered to them than having to go out and buy it...not everyone lives 15mins from an apple retailer. I'm certain the points about international sales and laziness play a role as well.
