Regardless of whether-or-not the 2019 iPhone is as ugly and awkward as recent leaks make it appear to be, why would anybody buy the 2019 iPhone anyway? It’s widely known (assumed?), that the 2020 iPhone will be 5G. Why the heck would anybody buy the last 4G iPhone, that will be completely obsolete in a year (or less)?

I personally will not be beta testing 5G services for any of the wireless companies. I will not be beta testing 1st generation 5G devices for any of the manufacturers. That being said, I certainly will not drop new phone prices for a future-less (late) 2019 4G phone. If Apple thinks iPhone sales were bad last year, they are going to feel really horrible this year, I do believe.

Ya know, the iPhone 4s was still a very big thing when the iPhone 5 launched. iPhone 5 was the first LTE iPhone.

In fact, the iPhone 4s outlived the iPhone 5, which only had a one year run. The 4s didn't die until around the time the iPhone 6 was launched.

Maybe you want to ask iPhone 4s owners why they didn't wait for 2012? I mean, beta testing 1st generation LTE devices, future-less (late) 2011 3G phone and all.

5G will take time to roll out. Prob in select populated cities. TSMC plans to release 5nm SOCs sometime in 2020, with risk test batches in late 2019. My prediction no new radical redesign until late 2020, or early 2021. Now is probably a good time to upgrade, where in two years the redesigns with 5G will be just coming out.

Well, I guess I AM asking iPhone 4s owners why they didn’t wait for the iPhone 5. I guess I’m asking everybody. I will say that the 4s didn’t cost anybody $1000.00+ dollars, or anything remotely close to it, like the new iPhones undoubtedly will.

I’m just curious.

I agree that now (or when the 2018 iPhones released) is a good time to upgrade...you would at least get 2-years out of the phone until the 5G phone is released. I just don’t see the value in upgrading in September 2019 or later. I’m just curious as to why anybody would.

I went from the original iPhone, to the 4s (which is still my favorite design), and then the 5s.

I didn't feel like I was missing anything by not having LTE on my 4s.

Actually, I didn't really notice that much of a difference from the mobile internet speed from the 3G to the LTE, unless I was in an urban area.

I later got a iPhone 6s Plus, and then an SE.

The biggest thing that is keeping me from upgrading my iPhone SE is the price of the X models. I also hate the design of the iPhone 8.

Assuming that this fall will have crazy priced phones, I will stick with my SE until it breaks.

Do you think that it might be wise to actually see what it looks like - for real - and what the features and price are before we decide?

Thank you for contributing your rhetorical question(s). Your points are duly noted.

Because you just want to (or maybe even need to for one reason or another)?

I thought that the title of the thread was rhetorical...

No, it is actually a legitimate question. I have my view, but am honestly curious as to why others have a different view.

Why buy the 2018 phone? Why buy the 2017 phone? Why buy the 2016 phone? Why buy ...

Don’t be snarky.

I guess the original question relates to why somebody would want to. The “needs to” thing doesn’t fly...nobody “needs to” buy the newest phone.

Well, I upgraded from X to Xs because of the better camera, and to try out the IUP. The camera is a significant improvement over the X, but of course that has to be important enough to you just like any other feature. Doubt that I’d do the IUP again, I’d probably just buy SIM free and outright as you do with everything else.

A lot of folks need to upgrade - they have old unreliable phones, or dead ones, they would like to use features that the old hardware doesn’t support, they gave their old phone to a family member etc. That last one seems to happen quite often reading the posts here.

I upgraded from the X to the XS Max, mostly because of the larger screen size. However, if the X had been released in 2018 and XS Max 2019, I would not have made the change with a 5G iPhone being released a year later. I knew I would get at least 2 years before deciding if it is worth getting a 5G phone. If 5G networks aren’t worth a damn in September 2020, at least that phone will be capable of using them when they are (unlike 4G phones).

Sure it "can fly" if someone's phone broke or something like that and they need another one and decide they might as well get the latest one.

I typically buy a phone that works for my needs and then hold onto it until it breaks or no longer works. Then repeat the process. I don't really care about having the newest and greatest thing, it just has to work correctly.

I currently have the X and did not upgrade last year to the XS Max due to my own personal reason (not because of the price of the XS Max). Apple may not even release a 5G iPhone until 2020 or 2021. Even if they did release a 5G iPhone next year, it probably won’t be able to take advantage of the faster speeds until the carriers release it. I’m upgrading my X this year, even though potentially Apple may release a 5G iPhone in 2020. No matter what, I will still get my money’s worth, as that device will last me for a few years.

Smart girl! Heck the X has A11 and 3 gigs of RAM. Probably better off waiting for real 5G to be widespread before upgrading. Check out this article. ATT, my carrier is full of BS! It's like calling HSPA+ true 4G. Just marketing BS to claim to be the first 5G. https://www.theverge.com/2019/1/7/18172355/att-fake-5g-logo-rolling-out-samsung-lg I would seriously wait until Apple releases a 5nm TSMC chip that has all the newest bands. I think 2019 and early 2020 is going to be very uneventful for iPhone and Androids.

I felt the same with the iPhone 7 (when we knew of the iPhone X design revamp).

There will always be people with 2+ year old iPhones wanting to upgrade, & then those with even older phones needing to upgrade.

In your example - 5G - it won’t be usable for much of the population, outside metropolitan areas in the first few years.

& 4G ain’t that bad...

You say you don’t want to be a beta tester, and don’t want to pay the price Apple is asking.

So seek another option. Samsung, Huawei, whatever.

Apple only adopted LTE after it was mature and widespread technology. The exact same thing applies to the 5G situation now.

iPhones are not known for adopting the spanking latest, first-generation wireless technology. They’re known for having a solid implementation of whatever’s been around for some time.

As @Ralfi above noted I’m sure there is zero content around right now that requires a downlink of over 300mbps. When there is, the iPhone XS will be very old news.

I won’t be upgrading this year based on the fact i am happy with my 8 plus.
5g isn’t a big deal to me, and won’t influence my decision to upgrade or not in 2020.

Why would 5G make other phones obsolete? They work just fine?

Personally, along with most other people, I have no need for 5G. 4G will serve me more than fine.

I am probably going to wait until a 5G iPhone is released before I upgrade...
If I am going to buy an iPhone, I am going to switch to a 3 or 4-year upgrade cycle. And 5G service might not be available right now, it sure will be in 4 years. On a 4-year upgrade cycle, I want my phone to be as future-proof as possible.

There is no ideal time to buy a iphone.
4g modems are at quite a mature stage now.
If you buy a iphone in 2020 it will be a “first gen” 5g modem and not at a mature stage like we have with 4g modems now. There could be potential battery life issues etc.

You’re analyzing anticipated phone features 9 months prior to launch. This alone puts you in a fringe group among the rest of the population.
