I have latest iOS iPhone Xsmax face id and passcode enabled. a friend just swiped right on my locked phone and accessed my photo library. What’s going on here?

I just did a test on my 11 Pro Max. Yes, you can swipe right and get the photo library through the camera app, but it shows "no photos" until Face ID is verified. No one would be able to see anything without Face ID even if they managed to get into the library app.

Either your friend looks a lot like you or you unlocked your phone (without swiping up to the home screen) inadvertently in the process of handing the phone to your friend. It isn't possible to see photos on a locked phone.

I can confirm this on my iPhone XR. Turning the phone away from my face, then swiping to the camera and tapping the photo (lower left) opens an empty photo library - because FaceID hasn't yet verified. If you then tap the "All photos" in the upper right, FaceID pops up requesting verification.

Once FaceID is verified the phone is basically unlocked, so it stands to reason that the photo library would be available. I think the OP's friend may have been able to do this because the friend was showing it to the OP and the OP's face was in range of the dot projector.

Your phone unlocked quickly before you even noticed so it was unlocked by the time you handed your phone to your friend.

This is why you want to swipe up to unlock Face ID as a feature. Those that complain this extra step is an annoyance and want their phones to unlock just by looking at it will then complain their phone is to easy to access.
