That's asking for an average post count of 2 a day for nearly a year. That's pretty steep just to have a small image to represent yourself on the forums. Most people who sign up to post a couple help topics or comment on a couple other topics rack up maybe 50 posts before leaving in a couple weeks-- which is far from the 500 mark.

I remember when I hit 500 posts. I was ecstatic because I could finally have an avatar picture. Only took me like 3 months to hit 500 posts.

It just depends on how much you post per day.

It makes me laugh reading this , seriously , if you REALLY want a picture NOW your missing the entire point of , not just this forum, but ANY forum.

It took me almost 10 years to finally get my avatar.

And I'm still not sure how I feel about the 500 post requirement. Then I look at all those new users from 2011 who already have an avatar and wonder how they're able to post so much. Most of the time someone already expressed my sentiments.

Well, for me it was.

I'm embarrassed to admit I was somewhat excited to reach 500 posts and get an avatar. Perhaps this is a comment on the pitiful nature of my life - but it was a kick. :p

I don't have any problem with the 500 post requirement. It kind of makes it a notable, and public, landmark.

I felt the same way - like it's a privilege to get your own picture after you've contributed so much to a forum. When you're a newbie, who knows you? Why would someone care that you have a picture? You're an unknown quantity. Once you can get an avatar, people have seen you around a bit, and can start putting the nick to a pic (no pun intended...)

(such a tuchis lecher.) :D:p

(Check with a Jewish grandmother for translation ;))

I don't have a Jewish grandmother, but I do speak some German, and can figure out pretty easily what "lecher" means ("lecker", auf Deutch ;) )

I'm alright with the avatar limit.

Didn't take too long for me to get an avatar. I don't remember the time-frame, but it couldn't have been more than a year...

Took me 13 month to get the 500 done ... I also have to admit that some posts before I was kind of chasing it ... Sorry.
But as others already said it indicates those who take the community more serious. The avatar (like the overall ranking) is just the visual indication of the regular communication.

Lol, isn't that the truth. Honestly, if you don't post enough to get an avatar, you haven't earned one. After all, iron sharpens iron. You post, you discuss, you learn.

Now, excuse me while I go add my avatar. I've had 500 for quite a few months now and I haven't bothered till today.

Perhaps the OP complains on other sites that too many people have avatars [already].

I've already had my avatar for at least 2-3 years, and I'm excited to move up from my current rank of 6502a to whatever the next level is - its not just all about the avatars :)

What is the 6502a all about? I've seen these numbers in profiles but have no idea?

Hey lets put a 500 post requirement to have an avatar, that will encourage people to spam the forum to get there, and that will greatly increase the quality of submissions to the forum, I just know it! /s.

The moderators are quite quick and often rigorous when it comes to real spam (advertisements) or just mindless post spamming and will delete when necessary.

There are not that many people who dislike the requirement (according to the weak contribution in this thread), thus the rule is still in place and hasn't been changed.
If suddenly 500 or more users would complain about this, thus this or a similar thread would grow to 13 pages (or more depending on your settings), the powers that be would certainly look onto it with another point of view I assume, and depending on the arguments, the rules might change (they often did in the time I have been here), but if members just complain with sarcasm and not arguments, it will probably just stay the same.

Just put the thread in the iPhone subforum and it'll get up there in page count. ;)

It's not surprising. I've been around Mac forums for a long time. It adds to that nice elitist feel of old.

Regardless. Challenge Accepted.
