I have 4.2.1..confirmed..upgraded the day it came out and iTunes says "your phone is up to date" but I can't do what others can..

I have folders but I cannot click home button twice and switch to multitask apps and I cannot change homescreen background image. I never jailbroke my phone.

I can't figure it out!! what am I missing?

thanks

Sounds like you have a 3G not a 3GS. Did you buy it new or used?

lol...I'm laughing at myself now because you may have just solved the problem. I got it used about a month ago. do the 3GSs have the "S" on the back next to the iPhone?

I'm looking up the part # as I type this...

You know the back where the Apple logo is? Are the letters or whatever on your phone the same color or are they black too?

answered my own question....can't believe it....I have a 3G

that makes sense now....Guess I can't complain since I only paid $40 for it....

$40 is a really good price for a 3G. You cant even buy the original iphone for that price.

Damn glad you didn't buy an old 3G I had.
Sold it on craigs for $150

with a two year contract. i'm guess the op bought his for $40 with no commitment.

yep. my blackjack broke but my contract isn't eligible for upgrade discount till August so when my co-worker said she had her old iphone laying around I offered $40 and she accepted and bam....I had an iphone to last me till August or whenever the iPhone 5 comes out (whatever comes first)

guess she didn't realize she could have sold it on eBay for 3x the amount

3G or GS it'll hold me over till summer.....

You can multitask on it. Just needs a simple jailbreak. I will warn you that 2 or 3 open programs on a 3g can slow it to a crawl....
