I just backed up all my contacts, music, etc. ready to restore my iphone because the wifi option on my iphone is grayed out and just says off, and it isn't clickable. I have an appointment with the Genius bar tomorrow but i'd like to restore to see if that will work. does anyone here know why the wifi option would be grayed out and off? no water damage or drop damage to speak of, just turned off one day.

anyways, i tried restoring but it just starts downloading 5.1.1, which i already have. why doesn't it let me just restore? can i skirt having to download 5.1.1 to my computer?

iTunes needs to download a copy of the firmware from Apple's servers. It cannot use the copy on the iPhone, because that copy will be erased.

any idea why the wifi is greyed out? the restore didn't fix it :(

Did you set it up as a new iPhone? If you did and its still grayed out, it is because the radio chip has a hardware problem.

I did and nothing, would apple have to replace the whole phone or are they able to fix the chip right away?

Sometimes they can just die without cause like that. They'll replace your whole phone. The chip cannot be replaced as it is soldered onto the iPhone's logicboard.
