Is it me being stupid or does the iPhone not charge when its powered off (not sleep but actually powered off). If you power it off then place it on the charging dock, it turns on and starts charging. Then if you power it off while its charging, it stops charging. Am I doing something wrong?

that's interesting. that's something i hadn't noticed before. but i gotta ask, why would you ever want to turn it off??

when i sleep i don't want any email, text, or call to wake me up and its annoying to put the ringer all the way down everytime

the closest thing to charging the iphone while off would be charging the iPhone in airplane mode. This would also stop your emails and other messages from coming in during the night.

if he has to go to the settings to turn the vibrate off, he might as well just turn the ringer down.

if you don't use it for any other reason, i don't see why not. i never find the need for vibrate, so i find it useful to have vibrate turned off on the otherwise aptly named "silent" mode.

While placed in the dock hold down the sleep/wake button and wait for the "Slide to power off."

That's how I do it. It charges just fine. Apple should fix it though.

I was just charging my iphone today and I'm pretty positive that it did charge while powered off. I first charged while it was asleep and then figured why not try while off, so I held the sleep button, saw the red slider, moved it to off and then plugged it in. I know it charged because later when I checked the battery was full, as opposed to mostly full.

there are three simple solutions:

a) wear ear plugs
b) flip the volume off switch
c) charge your iphone in another county

hmmm... I think i'd pick c

just turn it off while its plugged in and BAM!! your phone is off and charging

YES: Cycle on/off daily

I turn mine off just because it seems to loose performance if I leave it on for days (aka the last week, noticed today the performance loss)...

I was having service issues and AT&T told me all of their phones should be cycled on/off once per day. Especially if you travel a lot with a cell phone.

The tech guy said it helps the phone re-register the SIM with a cell tower and clears out registrations which could begin to build up and make the phone harder to connect to cell towers properly.

Sort of makes sense, but as my cousin likes to say, "That's retarded!"

Why in the world do we HAVE to do this with a consumer device? How hard is it for the phone to clear out the registrations itself???

I used to have to reboot my SLVR L7 once a week. Now, it's once every other day, although just last week I had to do it once a day for a few days. Dumb... just dumb!

i'll try that next time. the reason i was unsure of this was because there was no "charging dialogue" that showed its charging while it was powered off.

if it doesn't work, you could try plugging in your headphones before you go to sleep. any alerts will be inaudible. hope this helps.

I charge mine while its turned off with no problem... hmmm

(My partner wakes up anytime a light comes on - so I power off as does he)

I have never turned off a cell phone in ages. I just stick it on the charger, if I don't want to be bothered, its on silent mode.

Wow, yeah... that's a wild recommendation. I do it maybe once every couple of months, and only then because I drop it and it shuts off, or I get on an airplane (no airplane mode on a silly RAZR ;) ), etc.
