my phone has been charging and now wont turn back on.

I brought my charger with me to work. While I was on the way. The phone ran out of batteries... so I put it on the charger. It has been on there for about 45 minutes... I try to turn it on both in and out of the charging dock. And it will not turn on... Does it need to be fully charged!?

try holding the sleep/wake button with the home button together for a few seconds. this will do a hard reset and get the iphone started.

For some odd reason ATT's first answer to everything is "Turn your phone off and back on again." They loooooove that solution.

They've told me that with regards to slow internet, dropped calls, and (my favorite) when other people weren't receiving text messages from my treo, they informed me the recipient should turn her phone off and then on again.

wait a minute. the phone has to be able to charge when off. what happens if run the battery completely down?

It does charge when powered down. I think the original poster meant to comment that the phone turns on, if its turned off, when you plug it into a power source. (i.e. if you phone is powered down and you put it into the doc the phone will power up.) Once its connected to power you can power it off and it will continue to charge.

I see.
Seems like a small issue then to just turn it back off after you plug it in.

"I dropped my iPhone it smashed into millions of bits"
"Turn your iPhone off and back on again"

thats a window's solution isnt it? lol

to the other person saying why you should you turn it off to charge...

its FASTER, a hellva lot faster to charge when the phone itself uses 0mA vs xxx mA. even in sleep mode it still uses alot of power vs no power at all. if you need the phone charged as fast as possible you turn it off.

im thinking that it turns on so if your phone is off and you plug it into a computer to sync with itune, it auto turns on. however thats kind of anoying since i think the user will know to turn it on if they want to sync it.

i can see if it comes out of sleep mode but not power off

for those that charge while off, how long does it take to fully charge on average when the battery has 20% remaining?

For me, I find turning it off and charging takes roughly 7 hours for a full charge, where keeping it in standby takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

That is strange. I guess an explanation would be that:

The phone assumes the only reason its off when connected is because it ran out of juice not because you actually want it off and so powers on as soon as its connected to an outlet it can continue from whence it left off and quickly download any missed calls/txts/emails in the process

But yeah that is strange....and even when you turn it off again it stops charging for me

I tried charging mine w/ it turned off last week...after about 1 hour, I turned it on to check out the progress & the battery meter had not moved at all during that entire hour, so I just assumed it wasn't charging when the phone is off.. Guess I'll try it again for an overnight charge this weekend.

is there a difference between keeping it on or turning it off with a charge? I never turn mine off. I charge it at night through the computer and it doesnt turn off. Should I be turning it off to maybe save the screen or something?

Speaking of charging it'd be nice if the phone had an external charge indicator. Maybe the USB cable could have a MagSafe type indicator or the phone itself could have a small LED behind the glass like current iMac iSight indicators. That way you don't have to touch the phone or launch iTunes just to find out the charge status

i was unaware people used the word partner anymore...

Almost all the GLBT couples I know use it - it could be a regional thing - Im in So CA. - we've been together almost 6 years so boyfriend would be inaccurate and we are not married so spouse does not work - so generally I use partner.

I've had my iPhone for a month now, and have experimented 3 times with charging while turned off vs. asleep. I can say for sure that it charges MUCH more slowly while turned off, although I cannot say why that should be. Logic says it should be the other way around.

Wonder if it makes an issue if its plugged into comp or wall... seems strange if it would. I just did a quick test and after 10-12 minutes "charging" while plugged into my comp it stayed at 63% (using advance pref's for numbers)

You can turn it off? :D

Actually my friend got her iPhone before me and I already knew how to turn it off and she was like, "The only thing I don't like about the iPhone is that it can't turn off." Then I showed her how and she felt stupid. :D
