I get why the Apple intelligence requires a new chip to run, but I haven’t heard any explanation as to why Apple has dropped the 1st gen SE after only 4 years. I didn’t see anything particularly outstanding in the watch OS 11 that would require dropping a watch after such a short time. Anyone know?

The original SE used the same processor/SIP as S4 or S5, not exactly sure but those 2 are also not supporting watchOS 11

I’m guessing the older chips either can’t handle the live activities and widget suggestions or require too much power to do so and those are the 2 major features of WatchOS 11.

I bought that theory for why most phones won’t run apple AI. But the new watch features don’t seem that chip intensive. But I find a 3 to 4 year product obsolescence unacceptable.

Because the first gen SE was a repackaged S4 with the S5 SIP which was released in 2019. Since the S5 is being dropped, so is the SE.

Right. But unlike the AI announcement, apple did not say that Watch OS 11 cannot run on the SE’s chip. It just dropped it with no explanation.

Though it is released a year apart and the same year as the Apple Watch Series 6, the chip that is shared with the Apple Watch Series 5 in original Apple Watch SE isn’t the case when it comes to Siri, Smart Stack and additional Live Activities. As it can affect the new Training Load and Vitals app, it not have the advanced health sensors and computational ability necessary to comprehend the well being of Apple Watch users. The Vitals app uses everything beyond the typical heart rate sensor and sleep tracking does; blood oxygen levels and temperature (if applicable) are added to the mix.

If Apple did not drop the Apple Watch Series 5, Apple Watch Series 4, and OG SE out of the equation, these devices would have a hard time keeping up.

Apple Watch SE (1st generation) users, I understand the frustration with compatibility, but as a rule of thumb if you need to save on Apple Watch models on a budget, never get the lowest end SE. There are some great deals on mainline Apple Watch series 6, Series 7, and newer models that can be as low as an SE and still give you an extra few years of watchOS compatibility. These models even have the latest generation health sensors and the structural integrity of the SiP.
