Why can't the brightness level remain constant??? (And yes, I unchecked auto-brightness)

Hello,

On my M2 Macbook pro, every time I set my brightness to my desired level, then close and reopen the laptop, the display returns to 50% brightness. It's really bothersome. I disabled auto-brightness, thinking that it would go full manual, but nope!

How can I fix this?
