HomePod Why can't the Spotify client on Mac see my homepod?

As a recent convert from Apple Music to Spotify (music available on Spotify that's not available on Apple Music) I find it absolutely insane that the MacOS Spotify client cannot see my Homepod as an audio device, yet the iOS client can.

I can set the output of my Mac to Airplay to the Homepod, which is a horrible workaround as I don't want to route ALL audio to the Homepod.

Is Apple pulling some shenanigans here?

Yep, limitation of the Mac client. Been that way for years ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ so apparently, that's just how they've decided they want it.
