Why can't we sustain interest in Folding?

Now it seems that we have, "The Cows" be be concerned about.

When it comes to retention, once you have set up folding it runs automatically. No need for further interaction unless you want to check on your status.

I used to Fold since April 2003, but stopped once I bought a G5. The fans would rev too loud, so I had to stop.

mine is normal, you don't hear the fans, but I use the script of mc68k. Are your heat sensors calibrated ok?

Newbie folder here, I got interested because I noticed it in some signatures of people I respect.

I like the idea of extra gimmicks/namage with folding progress.

How about someone go through a bunch a people on the bottom of the team stats, find the ones who have not folded in a while and email to find out why, and tell they are missed, please start up again. (yah a bit mary poppins but ya never know).

But I can tell you that folding was something I had to search out, it was not as easy as finding stories about people's testicles, and stuff. A thread at the top of each forum, with an invite and gimmick gifts might start some interest or bring some back.

If this is all old ideas I'm sorry, didn't read the entire thread.

I entered the charts at number 1154 this morning with my 1st WU - 155 pts, Have a small 32 pointer that should be done today, and 241 pointer in about 9 days.

Stubeef- How do you know the point totals before the WU finishes? I must be missing something.

I've been at it since Mid-December, managed to make it into the top 250 and my work machine P4 HT @ 2.8 GHz is due to finish 2 larger WUs today along with my Athlon 1.3 GHz working on a smaller WU. My PB just finished one last night and my wife's 1.3 GHz Athlon is currently crunching on a large WU and should finish sometime in the next week. I'm trying to find more machines to run but I can't justify using our compile server at work. It's got dual Hyper threaded P4s so could theoretically take on 4 WUs at once, but it gets used for some pretty massive compile jobs and uses almost all of it's processor and memory power on those.

However you don't always get the points that is in that list!

Stubeef, in the folding@home FAQ there is a link to Stanford's folding website which explains everything, it is a bit of a work to find, and most will not bother to read it, but its there! Furthermore, emailing inactive folders of MR is, I believe, against regulations of MR. It's a bit like spamming someone. So you could get banned if enough people report you, even if you don't see the harm of it.

Thanks, just thinking out loud, I appreciate the other faq, I will try and find it. Thanks.
I was trying to refer to inactive folders that are still MR members, but that is probably bad too. Sorry!

Stanford's project summary list seems quite accurate, unless you have an early end unit and then, u have to use the formula to calculate the point total.

I don't think that there is anything about a casual PM here and there, but it could add up, if certain people don't want to be bothered. I could check into it, if you're really considering it.

Maybe if just PM the ones that did 5 or more WU then stopped, if for no other reason than to find out why.

I sorta suggested something similar in the "Oh the Possibilities" thread. I mentioned that the mods would probably have to okay it and just sort of assumed that one of them would have responded, since I believe Mr. A and Rower had posted in that thread.

If you could look into it, I think it would be a great start to get some people interested again. I bet some lost interest due to the lack of any real interest on the part of their team-mates. We've gotten some new folders in the last year and lots of them are pretty enthusiastic and want other MR team members to talk with...

I dunno. I'm just rambling now I suppose. But, anything is possible....

I submitted a thread about it in the Moderators forum. Since most everyone there is already an active folder, we should see some response. I'm not saying that it will be a positive response but some response. ;)

I think we must consider that most people have been too impatient to wait for results and that many don't keep their machines on all the time because they want to sleep. Imagine that! ;) There is also another group that uses laptop computers and, while I'm doing it temporarily, it's not a good idea. The fans are running constantly.

Hopefully, we can make a positive impact and remind people of the importance of folding@home.

One reason to get people more committed is to speak more on this forum. I come here every day, and normally no one posts anything new. Today, 5 threads have been updated. It seems like more people are already interested! Keep it up, both folding and posting here, it makes folding more fun!

Shh. Don't tell anyone, but I stuck F@H onto the DP 1.25Ghz Powermac I use in my Computer Graphics class.

If I have the time I may put it on the other 20-something that are in here.

While we appreciate the support of our folding efforts, please make sure you've got permission for any machine you install folding onto. We've had issues in the past with members getting into trouble for putting folding on machines without asking permission.

This may be obvious and stupid, but that hasn't stopped me before :p Can you banner or post a thread so everyone checks the team number they put in with F@H? Looking at the number on the Default team, it seems plausable that a few may be unaware they are not getting points for MR.

I don't think this was mentioned before,

How about parsing our team stats on a daily basis and PM'ing/emailing new members welcoming them to the folding team and pointing them to the distributed computing forum where we add a welcome thread where new folders can introduce themselves much like the new MR member thread?

We could also have a thread that updates daily or even weekly that parses the list to find the movers and shakers, recognizing those who are advancing in the team ranking. This might help to give incentive to people who think that their meager contributions are unappreciated since they can only run one computer and aren't moving up the ranks very fast and will never be noticed since they aren't near the top of the list.

I sort of started working on a script to parse the members list however I know someone out there could probably whip one together 10x faster and a lot more efficient and robust than anything I could do, (sounds sort of like a job for DoctorQ).

Switched to Team MacOSX

In answer to the original poster of this thread: I used to fold for MacRumors, but decided it was better to team up with the number one Mac team: MacOS X (1971). I'd like to see one Mac-team in the top ten or five.

The downside: team MacRumors seems to have a far more vivid forum!

Good luck, though!

Bram

Hi Bram,

From one Dutch guy to another, jammer! (=to bad, in Dutch) To bad, that you left. And thanks about the forum, although I find there could be a bit more posts in the distributed folding threads.

I think I may have installed the terminal version a long while back, before installing the GUI version.

How would I know if the terminal version is still installed?

type "work" in the terminal, if it says doesn't know command, it's not active, if you get a something else, percentages completed, it's still active!

also check you processes and look for something called :FahCore_(an number).exe

Becasue i have had a problem with the work command not working. If you upgrade to 10.3.
