What kind of stands are you using for the 12.9”?

I'm using this one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tablift-Ta...qid=1500902890&sr=8-5&keywords=iPad+bed+stand

It works very well, but the 12.9 (unlike other sizes) also requires the use of a slim hard case with this stand. I use this one:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Generation...&qid=1500903208&sr=1-1&keywords=ESR+case+12.9

I don't like having a case on for normal use, so I only tend to put in on when using the stand, which can be a bit of a pain. But it does make for a much better viewing experience, IMHO. The stand is not cheap, but it is well made.

I love watching the 12.9 in bed. Do it all the time.

I guess this is something that varies a lot from person to person. I'm definitely someone who tends to sit nearer the back when I go to the cinema. I also worry that having such a big, bright screen too close to my face will damage my eyes, but I'm admittedly a bit paranoid about that sort of thing!

Ive never messed w/ a stand style like that, is it genuinely nice?

Always used the sketchbook, multiple angle leather case, or ASK and silicone case (arrives today, used from eBay but in great shape supposedly)

Thanks

Hi there =)
I think it depends on your use case. It’s great for content consumption, like playing music, browsing the web and watching movies. It’s multi-angle and you can get the iPad almost vertical, which i really missed with case-based solutions. Esthetically, I think it’s much better than bulky cases but you can also use it with a back case like the silicone back case. The angle changing mechanism is flexible and stable.

cons: it’s aluminum and therefore very light, heavier would have been more stable, but it’s ok on hard/semi hard surfaces; over the mattress it’s not very stable. Estetically, it looks good, especially with the iPad over it, but not as great as in the pictures, where is looks like something coming out of an Apple Store. I have the silver version, which is a good match with my space gray iPad Pro. =)
Overall, I’m very happy with it, it does what I wanted. If you want to know more, just ask me =)

With trackpad support in iOS and a Magic Keyboard it would turn the iPad Pro into a mini touchscreen iMac and I would love that.

For me personally I just can't justify getting an iPad at 9 or 10 inches and actually wanting to use it over my iPhone 7 plus. I had the iPad Air 2 for awhile and after jumping up to the plus size iPhone, I just didn't have the urge to even use the iPad anymore. I didn't see a big enough jump in screen size to say to myself "ok. I'm going to put my phone down and go pick up ANOTHER device that doesn't seem much larger"

With my 12.9 iPad, it feels like ripping the screen off a MacBook Pro and holding it in your hands. It's amazing. And once I got used to this size I just couldn't go back down. I literally squint when I see a regular sized iPad. Sounds weird, but true. Viewing just about everything on the larger iPad is more comfortable and the keyboard is absolutely perfect for me to type on. Like I'm doing right now

Nice pink shorts
Cheers :)

Simple. Much, much more screen. Same reason people buy projection tvs
What?? There's no hidden reason to buy a bigger screen that we should talk about for 50 threads? Well that puts a damper on things

My main reasons for going bigger are: better multitasking, bigger screen for media and bigger ASK

I have both devices, i see no real reason to pick the 12.9 over the 10.5.
If you plan to be mobile the 10.5 is probably the best bet for you. If you are planning to use it on a desk - well i'd say for the money why not just go full on laptop rather than the 12.9. It certainly does more than an idevice

You get a bigger screen, thats all the difference there is between the two "sizes".

**Disclaimer** i have no interest in drawing on the iPad,

One of the primary usage for my iPad is reading comics. The 12.9 is so much nicer for that than the 10.5. Given the 12.9 is almost the same size as 2x 9.7 side by side, even doublepage spreads are tolerable now.

10.5 is a reasonable size, 12.9 is flipping enormous and I feel is only really appropriate in certain scenarios.

I mostly agree. A 12.9 can make more sense than both a smaller iPad and a laptop if you have a specific use case that calls for a large slate, such as serious drawing or note-taking, or comic or textbook reading. Otherwise, it's like you said, why not get a more portable device and/or a more powerful device? (More power = more tied to desk)

Well, the other case is if you want both in one device (for financial or other reasons). You can never truly have both but maybe the 12.9 might be the compromise some people are most willing to live with.

OP seems to want to draw, so depending how serious he/she is about it, the 12.9 might be the better choice for that reason alone. But if it's casual drawing, and the iPad would mostly exist as a laptop, then only because of those two functions needing to be combined in one device would a 12.9 be the better choice.

Personally, if I didn't draw, then the only iPad I would have is the mini. And I would get a 12" MacBook as well. I wouldn't want or need them to be one device.

If you're using the device at a desk or on the sofa, I can't fault the 12.9. I'm eagerly looking forward to iOS 11 too, you'll see plenty of glowing reviews about the 12.9 come September.

Having used the 10.5" for a couple of weeks now, it's definitely still a great device but split view is just not nearly as comfortable as on the 12.9" iPad. I feel like I have to pinch to zoom similarly like I did on my older 3.5" and 4" iPhones in the past while using split view in safari. It's a small niggle, but nevertheless, it's apparent that the 12.9" is more user friendly when viewing much content at once.

I went to a store again and tried the 12.9 more, this time had a chance to try the Apple Pencil with some popular drawing apps too. To me the 12.9 felt better for drawing as I needed to zoom less and UI elements took less screen space. At least standing up I didn't feel the iPad was too heavy to hold but I'm kinda used to a similar weight from my Air 2 and Type+ case.

Multitasking is also a marked improvement where on the 9.7/10.5 split view is more of a "use it in a pinch" type deal whereas on the 12.9 it was very comfortable to use extensively. On-screen keyboard is much better to type on too since it's less cramped.

So based on this I will pick up the 12.9 in a few weeks. I'll probably skip the ASK unless I can find one for a bargain price for some reason. Still undecided on Smart Cover because I would like something to prop the device up when used for playing videos but also for raising it when drawing but I have no idea if the Smart Cover works well for that because I have not seen it available to try anywhere.

Believe it or not using the Smart Keyboard propping it up is better on this than the Smart Cover. It's more upright than the Smart Cover when you put the keyboard behind the ipad to stand it up.

Answer is you need to buy the 7+, the mini, the 9.7, the 10.5 *and* the 12.9 and use each one for the micro task it is best for!

There is someone around here with 6 iPads, but yeah I only use one o_O

And a Macbook Pro, for when you need a mouse, or a pendrive

Yeah but I don't really want the ASK because it's so expensive and adds a ton of weight too. I am open to any other cover options but AFAIK only the Smart Cover seems to be just a cover without a back case.

It's not. I've been surprised to find that I have little problem holding the 12.9 one-handed (in portrait orientation) for hours at a time while standing sketching (even with a slim case, though it's better naked). In landscape mode it's more tricky, however, as you have to rest the iPad on your hand instead of gripping the side. This works but is obviously less stable, so I generally try and sit with the iPad on my lap when working in landscape mode (the ASK is useful in this situation). I'm hoping that Griffin will bring out an airstrap 360 case for the 12.9 some time.

Same here - occasionally I'll prop it up with my ASK, but generally I'm fine just holding it or using a pillow... I love the idea of the 10.5 - and would be happy to have both - but I LOVE the 12.9
