Seriously wouldn't it be nice to have the weather tile show the current temp kinda like the calendar icon does currently?

DING DING DING - We have a winner!

The map icon would have a working compass needle.

The weather icon would reflect the current weather with the temperature.

The music icon would be the cover of the music playing (when playing)

Photo icon could be a slideshow...

I'm amazed that they didn't do anything like this.

Agreed, all of those things would rock!

This is something I have wanted to see for a while, particularly with weather, but wouldn't the functionality be bad for battery life?

It looked in the video like the clock app showed the true time and the second hand was moving, maybe temp and other live icons are coming in future announcements?

It's probably because one purpose of an icon is to help the user quickly identify it on the screen. This holds true for some of these like Calendar and Maps (with compass). For the others, it would be harder to implement while still keeping it recognizable. Battery life is also a consideration for icons that need a constant refresh, like Compass or temp.

To have the current temperature displayed in the icon would require a constant data connection, which would be bad for battery life. The clock icon could change as the calendar does because it doesn't require data to be used. I'm sure Apple would agree with you that it'd be a nice feature to have, but the tradeoff of poorer battery life just isn't worth it to them for such a feature.

i wonder how long until all the app developers change out their glossy icons to something that matches...until then it will be an ugly mess with different looking icons...just like when using a nice and pretty theme only to find some apps stick out like a sore thumb...

Not really - the weather data doesn't change instantaneously. They could fetch an update every hour or so.

We don't know that this isn't happening. Hold your horses until the beta is actually in peoples' hands.

No offense but I could not disagree with you more. Having intelligent icons would serve multiple purposes. Entertainment, information and functionality...

Agreed, we don't know for sure just yet. Although I feel if this was to be a feature they would have made mention of it as much as people talk about it.

Notice that I said one purpose of an icon, NOT the only purpose of an icon........

It's about maintaining a recognizable icon that isn't a battery drain but is still dynamic. Hence, changing the date on the Calendar App is feasible while having a compass on the Maps app is not.

It wouldn't need a constant data connection. It doesn't have to update every second. It could function like Android weather widgets, where it gives you an option to select how often it should update. Updating every 1 hr is not going to increase data use that much.

You like having calendar's icon update right...

Agreed - and it would be something a bit innovative. I'm glad I don't have to open my calendar up every time to see the date, of course you can see the how that same benefit would apply to other datum.

I love apple but nothing today was new - more like they took existing ideas and executed better than anyone else.

The clock moves.

I noticed it moving during the keynote, but confirmed it by the photo of the iOS 7 ( http://www.apple.com/ios/ios7/ ) top image. The status bar and clock show the same time. I looked on my iOS 6 iPhone and it says 10:15. :)

What other intelligent icons would you like to see?

Scrolling headline icon news apps

Timer apps that show the countdown on an icon

Etc.
