why did all my playlists duplicate when I sync'd

I imported a music cd to my iTunes and sync'd it with my video iPod. On iTunes, there is no duplication of playlists, but on my iPod, all the playlists are duplicated or even tripled. why did all my playlists duplicate when I sync'd??
