My roommate and I are both getting MBP and he got his first and he went ahead and went to the apple store bought and bought the 4GB kit memory upgrade and Apple said it would cost $400 if he buys it and puts it in him self or if he buys it and apple installs it . it would cost $200 so he did the $200 option and it took them 8 hours to do a five minute job.. im going to be pissed if they pull that crap with me :-(

WHY IN THE WORLD would you buy ram from APPLE??? why?? ..why???

....

It's way easier to install and purchase the RAM yourself considering you can get 4GB of RAM for under $100.

LOL I guess I dont mind buying all my stuff in one place!

If you buy your ram elsewhere, usually less than $100, you can then ask for help how to do it. Hell, when you buy your MBP, it shows you how to install it. When you buy RAM from Apple, you are paying extra for nothing.

Who the heck cares if someone purchases their ram from mac or elsewhere?

Seriously?

If our machines go down due to memory issues and its on the shoulders of kensington, corsiar, samsung or whoever with a long drawn out RMA process, someone who purchased ram right from Apple gets the benefit of going into the store and getting a replacement on the spot.

But's the OP is complaining about it taking 8 hours, so we're complaining that he wasted his money.

It will take the Apple Store 8 hours to do that quick job because there is generally a queue of computers being fixed at the Genius Bar.

Secondly, you will find cheaper RAM elsewhere and you can install it yourself.

Fry's just had a special for memory for the Macbook Pro. It was made by Crucial(very respected brand) 4GB for $40.00 and free shipping.

There is a reason Apple has made it easy for consumers to change the RAM in their systems. If they didn't want you to they wouldn't of made it so a 5 year old could do it.

Guys, it wasn't your money. Posting about how the OP spent their money isn't going to change it.

Dear OP if you want something done well do it yourself.

we're not telling him how he should spend his money. We're giving him ADVICE on how to save money. It's up to him whether he wants to do it or not.

Look at the countless threads of "should I buy the mbp now or wait" "should I buy this or that"... what if everyone just say..its your money..not ours..so do whatever you want. Not much of a discussion board then right?

wtf?

Ever consider you might not be the only person in line to get something done?

Apple employees don't stop what they're doing for anyone who walks in.

That post made no sense my main complaint was it was taking so long I dont mind spending $200 to buy my memory the same time and same place!

And ya I told them I was pro care

Give the greenmymac a break. So what if he spent an extra hundred on RAM? He knows he got the right hardware with a full warranty from Apple and the convenience of having it installed right away. Some people don't mind paying a little extra for the Apple warranty and convenience of having it done right away by Apple employees.

It shouldn't have taken 8-hours to get the job done. If you get the manger out and push him a little, you could get it down to an hour easily, especially if you are a ProCare member.
