I have tried twice to get ram for my iMac both times went badly, first time round the ram was faulty, second time the ram was a cheap fake of what I wanted to but so I sent it back and asked for a refund. It took so long to get it all sorted our, refunds and all its put me off upgrading RAM at all. Thats Why when I get my MBP im just going to get apple to do it, dont want to go through the same hassle a third time

how are you a "macrumors Demi-God" and not know this?
Being a MacRumors Demi-God or Demi-Godess is NOT an indication of knowledge, experience or even time spent in the forums. Any "newbie" with 1 post, zero Mac experience... even zero computer experience... can be a Demi-God with a $25 donation to the site, as you can see in this thread.

...and where were you buying this RAM? From OWC or Newegg or one of the other vendors who are trusted and recommended on this site?

What do you mean "as you can see in this thread"?

My roommate and I are both getting MBP and he got his first and he went ahead and went to the apple store bought and bought the 4GB kit memory upgrade and Apple said it would cost $400 if he buys it and puts it in him self or if he buys it and apple installs it . it would cost $200 so he did the $200 option and it took them 8 hours to do a five minute job.. im going to be pissed if they pull that crap with me :-(

Dude, that's your money.. spend it how you like.
I guess IF some technical problem should occur they can't say "your memory is the cause" cause it's not your memory, it's Apple's.

Yeah, if you have money to blow, enjoy it.. I do it all the time, doesn't matter a few strangers get peed. So long as your happy it's ok. Right?
I got mine from Apple too but it was FREE Gift!! :D

Give the greenmymac a break. So what if he spent an extra hundred on RAM? He knows he got the right hardware with a full warranty from Apple and the convenience of having it installed right away. Some people don't mind paying a little extra for the Apple warranty and convenience of having it done right away by Apple employees.

It shouldn't have taken 8-hours to get the job done. If you get the manger out and push him a little, you could get it down to an hour easily, especially if you are a ProCare member.

Uhhh, no that's what he is complaining about....:)

I know but I forgot to mention Im a Pro Care Member
Then that sucks. Did they know that? I've always called ahead with procare and made sure they did it right away.
Did you talk to a manager?
The OP said he's a ProCare member. But the 8 hour wait was what his roommate experienced. Is the roommate a ProCare member?

LOL I guess I dont mind buying all my stuff in one place!

Which is foolish. You get raped on the price.

Who the heck cares if someone purchases their ram from mac or elsewhere?

Seriously?

If our machines go down due to memory issues and its on the shoulders of kensington, corsiar, samsung or whoever with a long drawn out RMA process, someone who purchased ram right from Apple gets the benefit of going into the store and getting a replacement on the spot.

Guess that's what the 400 dollars gets ya!

They have other customers too. You are not the first in line.

It will take the Apple Store 8 hours to do that quick job because there is generally a queue of computers being fixed at the Genius Bar.

Secondly, you will find cheaper RAM elsewhere and you can install it yourself.

Yup.

apparently you've never dealt with crucial. the few times i've had to deal with their RMA process it's been absolutely excellent. i've had to deal with apple twice now, and while they fixed my problem both times, it wasn't exactly easy.

Quit picking on the guy. If you have better ideas, then just say what they are and don't snipe like a bunch of schoolyard kids.

I don't know why no one ever mentions this, but you should call Customer Relations. They WILL do something about it. They'll give you something or another.

I would be pissed too if I had paid for ProCare (which I wouldn't) and bought RAM from Apple (which I wouldn't) and then had to wait 8 hours.

But it doesn't matter that I wouldn't, the fact is you payed for something above and beyond and should get good service. And believe me, Apple wants you as a happy customer, not a sour one, if you are buying a MacBook Pro, memory, and ProCare, you're a very valuable customer to them. So give them a ring and tell them what happened.

well if you spend 25 bucks for demi-god status and 200 for ram, money is obviously no object for you.

he didnt get it installed right away and your still under warranty if you have 3rd party ram genius

wow, what hatred against apple ram prices. by the way, it doesn't cost $400 for 4gb, but $200. i bought mine from apple and had no problems. not everyone want's to buy it separately, wait for that to arrive, order screwdrivers, just so they can save money. if you need it all in one, just get it from apple

Unlike some of the other posters on this thread, I fully accept that some people aren't technical in any way and don't want to have to fit memory if they're not comfortable with doing it themselves. I wouldn't pay over the odds for Apple to fit memory in my computer but I don't mind if someone else does.

But it isn't so difficult to fit memory and assuming you go to a reputable dealer for it the chances of it failing are broadly equal to the chances of the apple part failing.

You do need that screwdriver too, but frankly everyone should have a small set of commonly needed tools at home, not just for the computer but for odd things in the house, tightening up loose screws on your eyeglasses, changing fuses in plugs, etc.
