My 1st gen base rmb just sits beside the bed and i use it only when my android tablets are charging. my 2015 13" base mbp sits on a table in the family room and hardly gets used now. i've just fallen in love with my surface pro 4, surface 3 and hp spectre x2 m3. like android over ios, win 10 is just so much more flexible and the 2-in-1 touch screen unts are so superior over anything apple is offering. the 2-in-1s all have office, are fast, great screens, touch, pens, thin and light.

This is nonsense. I can run 10 apps, Safari with 15 tabs and Windows 10 VM with limited resources at the same time. Sure, its not fast but neither the M5 nor the M7 would do much better.
well the M5 difference vs M3 is visible.
I understand you've bought the M3 and become emotional and defensive but I don't need to insist on a well known established fact : M5 is noticeably faster and more powerful than M3.
Go check reviews and numerous threads here.
whether you are bothered about M3 performance or not is subjective, but no denying M5 is noticeably superior.

Not the slightest. I usually only keep my Macbooks a year or two anyway.

The real world performance difference between m3/m5/m7 is hardly even noticable. It's a lie to claim that simple browsing is slowing down the M3.

In my opinion it's a waste of money going for m5. That extra money could be better invested if you go for the Macbook Pro none touchbar which is at the same price level as the m5, if the extra weight doesn't hurt you.

I argue the contrary: it sounds like you are trying to justify spending the extra money on the m5.

"emotional and defensive" lol get out of here with that, you act as if the m5 runs leaps and bounds around the m3. This is simply not the case.

Whether you like it or not, the m3 and m5 do not have a wide performance gap. One exists for sure, but it's not large.

Just picked up a used M5, had been using an M3 for the past year. I do notice its a bit more snappy, and reviews show its about 8-15% faster than the M3. What I noticed most with the M3 was the heat and subsequent throttling down under video viewing and other loads, the M5 does have better performance under loads, even better than the M7. I've tried the MBPtb, the basic performance did not outweigh the great portability of the MB.

I can tell you there aren't slow downs when browsing, you can push the M3 quite hard without you even noticing you are on a fan less Core-M chip. Sure there are limitations but the M5 is not some super beast that will overcome them either, for that you need to move to a real Core chip. You will notice a difference in the time it takes to say export things in some video editing software and such, but for most users needs there are little to no difference. I use mine daily for browsing, watching video, coding Xcode, using Logic Pro all while having loads of software open. Is it slower than a MBP? For sure. Am I experiencing slow downs and lag all the time? Not at all.

Your argument about becoming emotional and defensive is just ridiculous, if I was experiencing an issue I would just go get a new computer until I found one that didn't so why would there be any emotions involved?

Best Mac I have ever owned. The form factor is really the main reason I got it. It is so light and compact that it really feels natural taking it almost anywhere. The screen is great, the performance is great (2016 m3) and I actually love the keyboard. I am excited to see where the MacBook line goes from here.

almost every single review that I've read claimed otherwise : noticeable better/faster performance on M5 vs M3.
so it's your word vs tens of professional reviews and various threads here.
It's a lie to claim that simple browsing is slowing down the M3.
it's a lie to mis-quote..I said browsing some heavy websites, and I witness that in front of my eyes that the thing kinda lagged while scrolling websites.

well that's your opinion and I completely disagree.
the price difference between M5 and M3 is not huge, but when you think about it, you are paying big money for this laptops why only get the weak, and slow M3? in my opinion buying M3 is waste of money.
MacBook Pro si a different product line, much bigger and much bulkier and heavier.
it's not comparable product.
again for 12 Inch MacBook the M5 is the best value, you cannot argue that.
you happy with M3? fine but that's you.

I only hear this M3 fanboyism from M3 owners who chose M3 due to budget limitation/consideration or lack or research.
as soon as they upgrade to M5 they are all like yeah the M5 is snappier and runs smoother.
there are tens of threads here in MacRumors for reference, even in this same thread there is a ex-M3 owner who confirms it..(read above)
there are numerous reviews all confirming M5 is noticeably better performer than M3,and the better choice.
so I don't understand why you insist on this nonsense.

I'm typing this on a 1.1 GHz rMB from 2015, with 7 tabs open in Chrome and 7 other apps open, and it's running just fine. Heck it's not even running warm right now. There could be other reasons why your friend's m3 is sluggish, but with how I run mine it works alright without any lag. This isn't fanboyism, people are just telling you their experiences. Obviously the m5 and m7 are gonna be better...

Also it'd be nice if this whole discussion got split off from this thread so people don't have go through all this trivial nerd talk.

All these years and still I'm very proud of being a "trivial nerd", which some may think is actually an oxymoron...

After reading these forums for a long time, and about every thread about m3 vs m5 vs m7, I'm still not convinced the m5 is actually that much faster. Stories arguing both sides, and there are plenty of reviews out there also claiming that the difference is negligible in real life performance (not purely looking at benchmark numbers).

In the end the 2016 m3 is close to the 2015 m5, and the 2017 (hopefully) m3 will be close to the 2016 m5. So the longer it's discussed, the less it will even matter for the next iteration of the MacBook.

It's true that the price difference isn't that much for just the CPU, but you need to pay for that extra storage. If you really need the storage, you might as well go with the m5, but otherwise the m3 will probably be just fine for most, and you won't notice those few extra percentages from the m5 benchmarks.

I'd just like to make it clear there are no defensive emotions (LOL!) involved with my perception of the M3 either. If I thought it wasn't fast enough I'd have returned it for the M5. It has nothing to do with budget concerns in my case but, I'm also not going to spend an extra $200 for space I don't need and a trivial speed increase. This isn't due to a lack of info, I've been eyeballing these things and reviews since they first debuted. You're free to continue paraphrasing your professional reviewers all you like but I've seen plenty reviews myself, as well as people here, with M3s including the 2015 model that have no complaints about performance.

I can say I got the Macbook as something that works in any situation for my every day machine used for browsing/coding and whatnot. I can easily bring it with my on a flight and use it when I feel like on the trip, as well as use it at home. Getting one cable docking to easily switch between where I sit is just the type of thing I use it for.

Got the 2016 M3 and it has been so solid with barely any lag or slow downs at all that I even decided to not do as I normally do and get a new Mac every year, I bought Apple Care for this one and will use it for another year. Something tells me that once the 2017 is released I might want to upgrade just for the fun of it.

2016 m3.

Form factor and screen won me over (as well as generous education discount and Beats headphone promo). I had a 2008 unibody 13" MacBook, which served me well, but the speed and weight were bothering me. I really wanted a laptop I could throw in my rucksack without thinking about whether it was worth the inconvenience of noticeable extra weight. My needs are pretty minimal (mostly web browsing, office apps and music) and it is just the perfect machine to meet those needs. I have the multipart adapter for the odd time I need to project the screen or connect something, but that's pretty rare.

It's completely eliminated my use of my iPad too.

I have the Early 2016 M3 and maybe you are right about the heating and throttling. On the one hand it works perfectly when it's used as a laptop. It handles all my web browsing (inc. heavy sites) and media consumption without a hiccup and with brilliant battery life. On the other hand, when I plug-in at home (charging and external monitor not dual display), it does begin to lag and struggles more and more as time goes on. I guess this is due to heating and subsequent throttling.

I'm not sure if the M5 or M7 would be any better. I don't really understand how the throttling works but I assumed, probably incorrectly, that all three chips would generate the same heat at any given frequency and throttle down to the same speed. I think I'm probably wrong though.

I'm happy with my purchase though as I mainly use it when travelling or out and about, so the M5 or M7 didn't really make any sense to me when I purchased it.

Oh, I bought my 12" MB for the excellent portability, build quality, battery life, and display (quality and 16:10) :). It was actually pretty good value as there weren't any other Windows alternatives that met my criteria at that price point. Also, by sheer luck, it fits in my small vertical messenger bag absolutely perfectly :D. No need to carry a laptop bag or make any special allowances for it. It's very convenient!

I bought mine (2016 M3) because of its design. Reminds me of the old 12" PowerBook G4's. Super light, 16:10 screen and smooth scrolling are godsends, it's just perfect, for me. My use cases are web browsing via Chrome, YouTube videos, and a vpn tunnel for work. Prior to this I had a 2014 13" MBP.

This seems weird to me, are you running it on a 4k monitor? All my intensive tasks are done while using my dock and a 2560x1440 display and the computer screen is completely shut. I do not notice any decline in speed at all when doing this.

I'm running mine on a 4K monitor (LG 27UD88, highly recommended), and either with or without external display, video (mostly Sling TV) seems to really tax the CPU.

Nope, it's a 1080p monitor, also with the screen shut. I'm pretty sure it's due to the additonal heat from the battery charging. After I unplug from the mains, eventually it will become less sluggish. Maybe I should test using the laptop display alone whilst charging...

Also I live in SE Asia and the ambient room temp is around 27/28C most of the year.

Hear, hear.

And, better yet, how about some people finally realize that the 12" MB is a notebook that's immune to these 1990's horsepower wars. No one should be buying Apple's thinnest, lightest, premium notebook expecting it to perform like a MacBook Pro. It was designed to be the anti-MacBook Pro.

It shouldn't be your one and only notebook. It's a second notebook for someone who wants a premium portable experience. It's a weekend convertible, not a pickup truck, so don't judge it like one.

Off topic, I'm curious, every time I see your signature. You list the cost of items for most things. I have two Rolex watches, I know what they cost. I drive a Mercedes, so I know about what any given Bimmer costs. I live in San Diego so most houses are beach houses. The "trophy wife" how much? :)

LOL.

I'm a well-compensated executive, but you're not going to believe me when I tell you- the trophy wife makes more than I do. So not only doesn't she cost me anything, she actually pays me. People always stress that one should "marry well". They ain't kidding. Jackpot.

Case in point is my shiny new Daytona Ceramic which she bought me (though she doesn't know it). Which two do you own?
