Had a late 06 MacBook. Realized I probably would get at best another 6 months of quality use out of it before it got relegated to netbook status. I decided to get in on a great deal for a early 08 MBP as a 3-4 year investment. Gave the MB to my wife, who only needs it for photos, movies, internet.

Next MacBook I get will be Pro as well. Event though they are are more expensive, I tend to think you get more longevity and use out of them.

I had the choice between keeping my 2 year old Blackbook, a MBP Classic, or a Glassbook.

I chose the MBP Classic for:

  • Screen
  • CPU
  • Keyboard
  • As previously said, longevity... I need this to last me ~5 years
  • Speakers
  • FW800
  • More bang for my buck

i went for a GlassBook Pro (2.53 w/ 7,200rpm drive) for the screen size over the 13.3" GlassBook, FireWire 800 and the 9600GT.

I use PS CS4 & Aperture on a regular basis, so it was a bit of a no-brainer.

MBP early 2008
amateur FCP usage
moderate gaming

I don't like integrated graphics cards

I still have a problem with the integrated graphics cards on the MacBooks. I always am one revision behind because I buy refurbs to save cash. The previous MacBook Pro's graphic performance is much better than the Unibody MacBooks.

You can still get a previous gen 15" MBP for the same price a the new lower spec'd MB unibody. About $700 cheaper than a new unibody MBP.

When you combine that with the fact that Snow Leopard will take full advantage of the power of cores on the graphics card. The MBP is the better choice if you want to get the most out of the life of your machine.

Wow. I feel so alone now:(. Nobody uses theirs only solely for Keynote running well, and also Quartz

Keynote should run on the MacBook. And Quartz, well should as well.

Not really. On the unibody ones maybe, but if you notice, some animations actually don't play well at all on the older MacBooks, even up to GMA X3100. The image lags. And for some reason, my past two Quartz animations have left the MacBooks dead in their tracks. even my friend's Unibody MacBook. The thing played at like 0.5fps:confused:...

Screen size, GPU for gaming, Firewire, and I wanted a computer that could basically replace my aging desktop PC. Those things and the Student ADC discount made the Pro not much more expensive than a MB!
