I implemented Zoom for my company last fall after months of testing WebEx/Amazon’s video service/GoToMeeting/blue jeans/ etc.

Why is zoom so popular? It’s idiot proof and it works great.

There may be questionable security practices, but there is NOTHING out there that is a simple to use from an end user perspective.

I'd resisted Zoom because I'd heard of the security issues.

Over Easter, since I couldn't be with family, I initiated a group FaceTime call, and while it worked pretty well, those floating boxes were too cute by half. They quickly became tiresome. We only had four on the call. Why not split the screen into quadrants? Or have three to one side and the person speaking on the rest of the screen?

Based on what you guys are saying, I'd like to try Zoom, though it may be harder to convince family since we all have iDevices with FaceTime built in.

I'm with you 100% on this. I can understand the reasoning behind floating windows if there are a large number of people on the call but if it's only four it makes absolutely no sense. Plus Facetime only does audio on older iPads. Because of these two reasons we switched to Google Duo. We've also been using Houseparty.

I don't have anything to add about my take on this since everyone else seems to have covered anything I would have said!

But I will say that I wondered about the same thing in the beginning, because when my wife's school district said the teachers could schedule video chats with their students, they were only given two rules about it.
1). You can not expect a student to join. You can set a time. If they join it...great. If not...oh well.
And rule 2)...do NOT (and they were VERY adamant about this) use Zoom. Use FaceTime or Google Meets (or hangouts, whatever it is called).

For a while, I did wonder why the huge migration to it. Before this all started, the only time I EVER heard of Zoom was because our hospital told us not to use it. And that was that. Never heard about it again until this started.

I think teams is pretty simple. Had a nightmare with Gotomeeting this morning. We weren’t hosting so not our choice.

We use Teams for internal work, but Zoom is for clients given it’s essentially click and go regardless of whether you’re a Microsoft user.
