Because people still buy it plain and simple... why use any of the 200 billion in cash to R&D a redesign when people will still line up for the old one
I think is one reason why Apple offers the 4 inch SE. It's larger than iPhone, it's still small enough for pocketability and one handed use. Not everyone wants the latest specifications and features. The iPhone SE in its form, offers excellent battery, life speed from the A9 processor and comfortability holding it.
And many seem to not realize, a lot phone manufacturers do not offer a phone in this size anymore.
I rally hope they upgrade the SE this year. I need to replace my current aging iPhone 4S. The only issue I have is that I don't particularly like the looks of the iPhone, including the SE.
I prefer smaller phones and really like the glass design of the 4
I do think in 2018 we will see a refresh for the iPhone SE. It would be two years from March from when it last launched. I think Apple will retain a similar form factor, but upgrade the chassis, perhaps a higher resolution display, and 3D Touch would be nice as well.
They had the 6 design. People complained about the antenna lines and no black. Apple complied with 7.You're right, we should have kept the iPhone 4 design until now. I mean it's one of the best iPhone design right?
Who gives a crap about bigger screen for multimedia right? 3.5" not big enough for you? Then go somewhere else. Am i right? Am i Right??
I Think some expect the iPhone to drastically change in appearance or form factor every single year, when that's not how it works or Apple's method of operation. Apple has not been known not to drastically improve hardware on an annual basis with the iPhone. It's Usually been gradual, similar to the iPad and Apple Watch continuation form factor. The iPhone has evolved with incremental improvements in terms of the hardware when you break it down.
If you look at the differences of hardware in terms of the iPhone 6/6S/7, factor in the stereo speakers, haptic home button, dual camera, reduced Antenna lines, 3D Touch, 7000 Series aluminum. When you consider all the hardware features that have been added over the years, which some may find improved and others may not.
Furthermore, perhaps certain technology was not prepared or readily available until now with the iPhone eight and the overall major changes coming to the OLED model.
Lol, it's fine even if they don't announce it. A quiet update on the Apple Store would suffice.I hope so, because I really need a new phone.
Judging by their willingness to upgrade the internals of a lot of their current hardware and their understanding and acceptance of how far behind they were falling, I'm cautiously optimistic that they might announce it during the upcoming Keynote. One can hope.
Just want to add. The 2007 iPhone and the 2008 iPhone 3G were essentially the same exact iPhone in terms of screen, processor, camera and ram. Basically apple had to make it plastic in 2008 cause of poor cell phone antennas in the 2007 iPhone. All they did was add a 3G chip. And apple sold millions basically just changing to a plastic iPhone. Lol. That's the apple way. And consumers fall for it all the time.
Uh, it's true. The iPhone 3G only added 3G support and changed to a plastic chassis. CPU, RAM, etc. were the same. The 3G was pretty much the OG iPhone wearing different clothes and support for newer cellular networks. Not true. If so, the original iPhone cases would fit the 3G and they don't. So add the shape is different along the internals and you do have a different iPhone.
Wow a tear dropped down my eyeJony Ive wants to blur the line between where software and hardware begins and ends.
Quite frankly, I think the big change here was the iPhone was the beginning of the modern smartphone as we know them today and smartphone penetration was very low at the time. The iPhone 3G also marked the start of subsidized $199 pricing. Take away the subsidy and smartphone adoption wouldn't have happened as quickly.Just want to add. Apart from us forgetting about the GPS, that's pretty much the same thing aneftp and I are saying. The iPhone added 3G and changed the chassis/case.Inside:
The iPhone 2G only supported WiFi, GSM, and Bluetooth. This means its speed surfing the Internet were quite limited. The iPhone 3G introduced 3G speeds to Apple’s flagship model, and it also supports WiFi, GSM, and Bluetooth. This makes for a better experience surfing, watching Youtube videos, and downloading data onto the phone from the Internet.
The first generation iPhone supported the following frequencies: GSM and Quad-Band (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz). The iPhone 3G supports all of those frequencies, but added to the list quite a few more to enable running at 3G speeds, including UMTS/HSDPA (850, 1900, 2100 MHz). The iPhone 3G also supports GPS, which was not included in the original iPhone.
Outside:
The iPhone 3G features buttons that are made from a shiny metal, excluding the home button. This gives them a sturdier feel compared to its predecessor. The shape of the 3G phone is a major difference as the original iPhone is a little thicker and completely flat when set down. The 3G has more of a round feel to it that flattens out slightly around the edges.
Original iPhone had Bluetooth 2.0. iPhone 3G just added EDR support. Quite frankly, I don't remember Bluetooth being particularly useful on the iPhone until around 4/4S when the hotspot function was introduced. Early Bluetooth headsets were pretty awful. And added bluetooth.
Aesthetics, I'm torn between black iPhone 4/4S and Slate Black iPhone 5.While I appreciate most of the developments and technological advancements with each iteration of the iPhone, from a purely aesthetic point of view, I still like the black iPhone 5 the best.
As to the original question, which presumably refers generally to the iPhone 7's chassis, I believe Apple is saving most of the wow factor for this year's iteration. At the same time, they didn't feel the need to change it for change sake.

The original iPhone was exclusive to AT&T but not subsidized. Caveat, can't really use the iPhone on any other carrier. Unlocking wasn't really a thing in the US back then.Don't forget about the fact that they cut the price IN HALF. From $400 (subsidized) to $200 (subsidized). That helped move a ton of units.
Sadly, can't even use it with AT&T anymore. . .The original iPhone was exclusive to AT&T but not subsidized. Caveat, can't really use the iPhone on any other carrier. Unlocking wasn't really a thing in the US back then.
Those who purchased the OG iPhone weren't locked into a 2-year contract and were free to upgrade to the iPhone 3G from day 1. But yep, subsidized pricing is what drove smartphone adoption in the US.
