Why do animated gifs freeze when scrolling in Safari?

And start "moving" again when the page has finished scrolling?

    I'm assuming hardware limitations?

I've noticed this. Also their performance isn't all that great either. There is a website that I visit regularly which has a lot of user submitted animated gifs and they rarely run smoothly. They run fine on my Macbook however.

What would you suggest for getting basic stop-frame animation without Flash then? I don't think you can have animated PNG's?

I have quite a collection of gif images from various websites and forums. While the ipad can view gifs in the browser, having them as pictures in the photos app, they are not animated. This is disappointing.
