Why do AT&T and Verizon iPhone 7 have identical model#/part#? (A1660 MN8K2LL/A)

My sister-in-law has the AT&T Wireless iPhone 7 32gb rose gold. It was purchased a month ago.

I purchased a Verizon Wireless iPhone 7 32gb rose gold recently.

It just occurred to me that both of the have identical part numbers.

Both boxes show: Model A1660 Part No. MN8K2LL/A

Is there only one iPhone 7 for both Verizon and AT&T?

All iPhone 7s from Best Buy are identical. Once you put your sim in it then locks itself to that carrier, unless its Verizon, then it becomes unlocked. Which is why I had them use a Verizon sim on first boot, and use it on T-Mobile.

the 14-day return policy) and buy it again from the
local Verizon Wireless corporate-owned store?

What sim card did you activated it with?
If you do the initial activation with a verizon sim it will be unlocked for good.

only Verizon sim card... I've never used other carriers.
