Why do fire departments still sound sirens?

I asked the fire chief in my town in NJ why they still do that. He said people can sleep through beepers and cell phones. They can not be charged up. Etc Etc. Nobody misses the sound of the horn.

I recently moved and am only a block away from the local fire department. Why the hell do they still sound those ear shattering sirens? Is this necessary in this day with cellphones and beepers?

My cellphone is off while in my car and I don't have a beeper .

The siren is used to warn traffic that is passing by the station. You will not even notice the siren after awhile.
