The weather's getting warmer, meaning the flies are coming out.

I've noticed yet again, like every year, that flies are making spots on the top vent of my 2022 Studio Display. They do not bother my Dell monitor next to my Studio Display. Maybe they like the active cooling that my Dell does not have. Anyone else experience this problem? I do not keep food in this room. I ordered this directly from Apple during the supply chain crisis, and it shipped straight from China, so this would not have been sitting in a warehouse that could have had mold like I've seen another member post about.

I don't have any answers for you OP, but this is my kind of mystery so I'm grabbing some popcorn. Best of luck trying to solve this!

Might be a stupid question, but have you tried putting a UV fly trap in an outlet somewhere? Maybe they'll like that light better and stick to that instead.
I have not tried any UV traps but have tried adhesive fly strips. Didn't do too good of a job, and after a day I didn't want it on my monitor (didn't cover the vent holes though).

I guess if the window is open something else small enough could be in there.
The room with my desk is next to the kitchen, which is next to the back door, so that's probably how a fly would get in.

I don't blame you. I wouldn't either. But those UV fly traps with the adhesive pads work well for the little flies we get down here in the summer time. Might be worth a try. They're fairly cheap!

Sorry, not familiar with that monitor first-hand. How large are those holes? Just thinking those spots look too large to be just typical fly poop/regurgitated leavings, but I don’t have a good idea of the scale I’m looking at.

EDIT: BTW, I second the advice regarding UV traps with sticky cards. They really do work, but be aware:

  1. They work best at night since there’s little to compete with them in the dark.
  2. The UV tubes do burn out, so buy a trap that uses replaceable tubes. If you only use it while you sleep, the tube should last around a year or so. If you try to have it on 24/7, you’ll only get 3-4, maybe 5 months out of the tube.

(putting on my dark glasses..)

Maybe the flies like YOU, and are just observing from the vantage point of the display...?

(sorry, just teasing, running and hiding...) 😎

Might be trace organics coming from the parts in the monitor when they get warm. They probably outgas a tiny amount but flies can smell it.
