I just got an M2 Pro Mini to replace my 5K iMac and got an Apple Studio display and a LG 4k 24" as a second monitor. For some reason the LG actually looks much better. Appears brighter, the whites are much whiter, the blacks seem darker, and the colors are more vibrant. The whites on the ASD have a yellowish tint in comparison and the blacks are more of a very dark grey. The brightness on the LG at 100% is almost too much. I have the brightness turned up to 100% and TrueTone off. Any idea why the LG would look better? Thanks

I have both the ASD and LG 24" 4K and agree with you. I would have expected the ASD to be brighter and more vibrant but it isn't. True Tone turned off too.

This thread might need moving to Mac Accessories :)

I never owned a Studio Display, but the specs sheet says the screen is supposed to max out at 600 nits compared to 500 nits for the LG Ultrafine. Quite surprising that your experience is the opposite

I'm also surprised. I don't how much a difference 100nits makes. I can compare it against my 5k iMac and it's not noticeably brighter, which isn't too surprising, but I don't get why the LG seems to be brighter and whiter. The ASD looks washed out in comparison.

OP is clearly an LG plant on the forum 😛. Kidding, of course. Are both displays glossy? Seems like if the LG were matte, it would make a difference.

I've heard someone saying on Reddit that has tried out all the LG monitors and thinks the LG 24 inch has the best panel out of all the Ultrafine monitors for Mac. Its also, as far as I know, the newest model.

Definitely an interesting comparison to make, as most people just compare the ASD to the 5K model.

The Apple Studio Display is much more colour accurate than the LG Ultrafine 4K according to the measurements done by Rtings. So the ASD is more in line how it should look like.

However, if you prefer the LG Ultrafine 4K, there is nothing wrong with that and you can save alot of money going for the LG Ultrafine.

I've never had the brightness at more than 30% on any monitor I've owned. And don't really care how "white' the white is. Most all of the time I'm working with reading black on white text - some of it small. How do the two monitors compare in that regard?

Ah thank you, that makes sense. Although I don't have the LG Ultrafine 4K, I have a LG Ultrafine 5K at my office and an Apple Studio Display at home and I've noticed the colors being a bit cooler and more saturated on the LG Ultrafine 5K. Since I'm using both for work and not content consumption, I prefer color accuracy so good to know the ASD is showing things as intended.

Yes they are both glossy. Don't get me wrong, the ASD is a phenomenal display, I'm just wondering why the LG has brighter, more vibrant colors compared to the ASD, which has what appear to be more drab whites when you compare them side by side. If it's a color setting or something. I thought it was True Tone, but I turned that off.

I haven't seen the 24 vs the 27, so I don't know how the 27 compares against the 24 or ASD. Compared to the ASD though, the 24 isn't as sharp, but I'm surprised how good the colors on the 24" looks in comparison.

Yeah that's how I'd describe it. Maybe the ASD is technically more accurate, not sure, but if I hold up a white piece of paper next to the screens, the LG looks more like that white than the ASD. If all I had was the ASD I wouldn't say the whites were not that white, but the LG appears whiter to me.

I'm sure that's the case. The colors on the ASD just appear more warm to me in comparison. Not sure if I prefer one over the other, but to me the LG makes the whites on the ASD look kinda faded.

That actually aligns that what I read about the LG Ultrafine 4K. Apparently the Color temperature exceeds the 6500K point which gives the screen a cooler look.

But this is easily fixed with a hardware calibration.

The white on the paper depends on the color of the ambient light in the room. Try it in late afternoon when ‘golden’ light is available vs at night with a cool white fluorescent light. The white on the monitors won’t change, but the apparent white of the paper will!
