Vista flopped today. Hopefully Leopard does NOT flop when it is announced "this spring", but if it does, well, then Google will announce an OS and take computing into the future - where Apple and MS have failed to do.

Haha! ;)

No, seriously, Vista's introduction really was underwhelming, if you ask me. And I think/hope Leopard is going to really WOW us - unlike Vista. Poor Bill Gates - bless his heart :D I almost feel sorry for the guy today after watching the Vista launch. But then I think of how rich he is and I don't feel sorry any more :D

Actually Bill Gates and his wife give alot to charity and I think have charity of their own. As for the underwhelment of Vista, I did read where most are waiting for the bugs to cleared before they buy it.
I myself and totally happy with my os x. Nothing could make me go back. Hubby however is waiting to get a new laptop and he wants windows. I told him to wait for vista. Glad I did after what I read about the VISTA READY computers. He may end up getting one this summer. I hope it works out for him.

How do you use it.
Thanks

Mine was set up when I bought my mac. Try squeezing the mouse on the side on the left or the right.

If it does not work. go to dock preferences.... then dashboard/expose and set it up there under all windows. my f9 and mouse button 4 is set up for it.

that should be able to show you all that you have open on your desktop.

We've had it since Panther. It's called Exposé.

I actually like the Mac version better. You can see all the windows unobstructed.;)

I haven't seen it work 'in the flesh' but Vista's version of Exposé seems weird to me - let's see, I press this key so that I can see all of my windows at once and, hey, I still can't see all of my windows at once!

What's that all about?

I don't know ... Why do you even need a computer?

I don't get you people ... what's "64-bit enabled" about it ... it's just "64-bit" ... I don't see how 32-bit operating systems are 64-bit disabled ...

Besides, G5 = 64-bit, so Tiger must = 64-bit, right?

Tiger runs in 32-bit mode on Intel, I'd expect that changes a few things here and there, most likely the amount of data loaded into a register- 1/2 the number of loads should give a fair boost in performance for anything that's fairly register-bound, and you get more registers in 64-bit mode- how the compiler optimizes is obviously going to make a difference, but overall I'd bet we see a fair performance increase on C2D systems. If there's not a lot of new bloat, I'd expect the framework changes and overall system changes to give somewhere around a 10-15% performance boost. By using the term "64-bit enabled," I mean "really 64-bit, not 32-bit mode on a 64-bit capable processor or running partially in 32-bit mode unless you're a service running in the background."

I took a look at the apple site about the future release of Leopard. Nothing really stood out for me as very exciting or necessary reason to upgrade. Am I missing something or is this just a minor upgrade to tiger?

Well, when one of the 'Big 10' Leopard features demo'ed is that it includes already released components like Boot Camp, you could be forgiven for thinking they're scraping the bottom of the barrel.

To be honest, I'm not sure I really want them sticking in features for the sake of having a big flashy feature list. I'd rather they just tweaked performance if possible, tidied up elements of the UI, and introduced new APIs for 3rd party developers (which they are doing).

That said, they still are keeping some features secret, who knows how big they are.

I understand it is a 64 bit OS and if you have a 64 bit processor ... that is a big deal in it self...

If you aren't going to be addressing large chunks of RAM, say greater than 4 GB, you aren't going to see much of a benefit from the "64 bit" capabilities of the processor or the OS. For the average user, there won't be much a difference. However, Leopard will include many improvements, and I'd bet we'll see an updated Finder and consistent GUI (i.e. the absence of brushed metal).

To all those who think Expose's windows are too small try this.

After pressing F9/F10, press the Tab button to cycle through all the windows on desktop one by one...individually. I think this is waaay better than Flip 3D and a great extension to Expose functionality

Would my Macbook run Leopard? (Specs in Sig... only 1GB ram right now)

I played around with Vista last night (well, I have played with the betas but never on hardware that could handle flip 3d and aero). I was unimpressed. You can see the windows, but they are stacked on top of each other. Exposé with the tab key is as close as you'll get on OS X, which imho is better anyway. On flip 3d the windows are on an angle and still too small to really get any detail unless you have a huge monitor. Exposé with tab has them flat and shows their actual size is most cases.

In Vista, if you hover over tiles in the task bar, a small preview pops up. For anything other than a movie or small window, this is absolutely useless.

It was sad at the shop last night. So many people were saying things like "wow, I like how the windows minimise" or "that flip 3d is so cool". They obviously had never seen OS X. The other sad thing is, only the high end expensive machines had those new features. Most people buy at the lower end of the market, which only come with Vista Home Basic, and is really only XP with a different skin, some extra programs, better security, and changes to already existing programs. I really don't think Home Basic comes near as close as even Tiger. Leopard will kill them.

I already had somebody actually point to those things as proof Windows is ahead of Mac OS X.

Actually Bill Gates and his wife give alot to charity and I think have charity of their own.

Not to take the thread off topic or anything... but the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is the largest charitable foundation in the world. They're doing more to stop the spread of HIV and Malaria in Africa than the US Government is... for what that's worth.

Sometimes it's tough, but Savanahrose is right to separate Bill as a person from his company.

Vista recommends 1 gig of ram, right?

Does OS X recommend 512? I forget...

-=|Mgkwho

Tiger says 256 MB.

Leopard says 512 MB Recommended, at least according to the latest release notes in 9A343 (the latest Developer Seed as of Feb 1st).

Vista says 1GB of ram but really needs 1.5GB to 2GB of ram to run all the "eye-candy" On..

Gadgets use 256MB of 1GB on Vista Premium systems..

Seems like M$ft can't copy a widget right ..

Tiger can run on 256 MB of ram .. a quarter of the ram that 'Vista' requires..

even @256 MBs of ram for tiger, it's slow but it useable

Even if leopard requires 512MB of ram, it'll be under Vista requirements

here's a reason to like Leopard: :D

I've watched people on TV cooing over that Flip 3D thing - do they not realise that it offers nothing over tabbing between applications (something they've been able to do on a Mac or Windows for a long time), not to mention being nowhere near as useful as Expose. This feature underlines why Apple is still years ahead of MS in user interface design.

This is probably the #1 thing that is annoying me about Vista. Everybody keeps talking about Flip 3D like it's amazing!

I set up my center mouse button to F9 expose. Klick - bomb - kilck. I can jump from any window to any other no mater how many windows I have open. And I can see exactly what is in each one. I fear MicroSoft completly missed the point on this feature...

daughter wowed by expose

My daughter just seen expose the other day in motion. She was amazed. She is using xp pro right now. She had been using my old windows computer (but now prefers my mac) and had not known about it.

I do believe that when her and her husband get their own computer it will be an imac. :p ;) :D
