I'm just curious what everyone's justifications are for buying this iPad mini??

Yeah... it's an iPad that is smaller, which may make it easier to carry it around.
Other than that.... is there any other reason to get a mini?

The size isn't the deciding factor for me but the weight is!

Its all about the weight. Personally i'd prefer a ipad 4 with the weight of the mini.

The current mini is bad as a reader because it does not have Retina display yet.

So its only good for kids who want a small cheap iPad.

When the 2nd gen iPad mini comes out with Retina display then I would say its good to get for an E-reader. But not till then.

Besides when Apple comes out with the thinner and lighter iPad 5 it will be so much easier to hold and use. It will be very enjoyable to read on.

we'll see how people will be using their iPad mini

i'm imagining you getting mad at people who'll enjoy reading with it :D

Sure people can still use it for that.

But there are much better e-readers on the market right now so it would be a bad decision.

Your all welcome to make your own choices.

All iam saying is the mini with retina display will be a better reader.

And Iam holding out for that before I would even get one.

Kids will enjoy it this year for Xmas.

The claim 'there are better e-book readers' could also be made against retina iPads. Judged solely as an e-book reader the Kindle Paperwhite beats out the retina iPad on a number of counts. The fact that there are better single use devices on the market , ie better e-readers doesn't make the mini a poor choice for those of us who are looking for a better all around device that meets our needs as an e-book reader, but also is better suited for surfing the web, playing games, and delivering media.

You can always make the claim that the one more thing to come is better than the one more thing we have, but the one more thing we have is something we can actually use and enjoy versus something we can only long for.

I have an IPad 2, which I am very happy with. However it is sometimes a struggle with my wife as we both use it and fight for possession of it. As such I have been looking for a 7 inch tablet to supplement our needs for a while.

The iPad mini fits that bill. I really don't care about a retina display as the IPad 2 screen is fine for me, and the mini will be the same resolution with a better DPI.

I also do kindle reading on my iPad and this will be lighter weight for that.

I have always been something of a handheld gamer so find the idea of a 7 inch tablet a little more personal.

I'll still use the iPad 2 for when we watch movies, but use the mini for myself.

But then my wife and I only have basic cable, a DVD player and a 14 year old tv. I use the AV cable connector to tv out from the IPad 2, which is something I am not sure the lightning connector can support. Our tv is too old for an Apple TV.

Oh that and I just want it as my tech item for the year. Was looking at getting a 3DS XL, or a kindle paper white, or a Kindle Fire but nope. I was going to consider getting a IPhone 5, but just wasn't feeling that either.

So I'll keep my iPhone 4, and if it dies (I am eligible for an upgrade) I'll get a 4S. I think it would be stupid to get a larger phone and a smaller tablet, and I really like the size of the IPhone 4/4S. Something about the IPhone 5 just seems dainty to me.

But as I said, that and I want it.

Why must there be justification for buying an iPad Mini? If you like your Retina iPad, keep it. If you want something more portable, get a Mini.

If you don't have an iPad but you're considering it, get a Mini at the starting price of $329. If you want a bigger one with retina, get the iPad 3 for $50 more. If you want it *new* and you want the most up-to-date product, get the iPad 4 for another $120 more.

Why must people compare the value between each product? They all serve different purposes for different needs/wants. Plus they're all on different a different pricing scale. Jesus christ, stop comparing the Mini to a retina iPad 4.

As I mentioned I use my iPad 2 as a video player, having a second tablet to use while TV outing from my iPad to would be nice.

I have an iPhone 4, and ipad2, WiFi.

I love my iPad 2, and use it everyday.
However, because of its size, I keep it at home, but
have always wanted my iPad to be smaller to carry in my purse.

My son says that an iPhone can do everything that an iPad
can do, so I don't need a Mini.

I told him, working on an iPhone is very hard on my eyes,
so, for me...I did not hesitate to order: iPad Mini, black, 32GB, WiFi+Cellular.

Plus, instead of getting an iphone5, I will finally have the SIRI experience,
as well as turn by turn navigation, on a screen I can see.

so it is a year later.... iPad Air and iPad Mini with retina display

OK I just came across this thread while searching for "Why do I need an iPad?" (wife acceptance factor) and wondered how the previous posters think a year later with respect to their old comments and the new hardware?
-iPad Mini with Retina diplay now
-lighter iPad with the air model.

Now that the new iPad Air and iPad mini with retina display have come out the specs are pretty much identical except the screen size and the iPad Air is now lighter than the previous gens.... it makes it a bit more appealing.

I currently have an iPhone 4 with iOS7.0.3 and I have noticed it is slow and I really hope that Apple fixes this by optimizing iOS7 as many have commented including Chris Pirillo in one of his live streams I watched on YouTube. He comments how even on the latest hardware that it is slow and needs to speed up and some bugs in the display exist, etc. Anyway I'm not too happy with iOS7 performance but hopefully Apple will fix things and I kind miss the interface details of iOS6.

I am piqued by the new iPads and have waited pretty much for 5 gens of iPad to come out and the 2nd generation of iPad mini as I wasn't really impressed with the non retina model coming out at the time the iPad 4 ("the new iPad") came out. I was still confused why apple continued (and still continues) to sell and manufacture the iPad 2 when it is non-retina and considerably slower than the new models but they phased out the iPad3 and the iPad4 is just retiring as the iPad Air came out.

I am now posed by my wife (WAF) as to why I need the iPad Air or iPad Mini with Retina Display (both close to $900-$1000) if I have my MacBook Pro downstairs and we leave her Toshiba laptop upstairs in our small house and I can't really use the iPad on the subway for commuting except for reading, games, etc and when I get to work I have a computer there.

I indicated I can use it for traveling for everything from maps to helping with web-check in, checking email, browsing the web, etc and then I don't have to drag my laptop around but we just came back from a long trip and I should have bought one before the trip but the new models just came out while we were away. She is suggesting that we don't need one now and to wait until we travel next time, etc and by that time we may be imminently waiting for the next model of iPad/iPad mini to come out at that point.

I'm still not sure if I would get one with Cellular but it would allow me to get GPS and use LTE when traveling which would be better than my iPhone4.

She says why do I need an iPad when I have an iPhone which I state is slower (OS) and network speed and smaller screen. Originally when I bought the iPhone I just got it more to have access to the internet on the go and I don't really use it for a phone per se (and still don't). I have a blackberry from work that I primarily use as a cell phone at this point if I have to use one which is rare as I'm mostly near land lines most of the time. If the iPad had come out at the time I bought the phone I probably would have bought it instead but the screen is so much smaller on an iPhone which is one of the primary reasons I would want an iPad. I guess I still need an a phone of some sort if I change jobs so relying on the work phone should not be relied upon.

I get the line you need to find 3 reasons why you need an iPad especially when I have a laptop and the iPad can't replace it, etc.

At this point I'm not sure if I would buy another iPhone and I could go back to a dumb phone, etc as I'm not a big texter or social media person... but in the back of my mind I'll probably need a cell phone later especially to have personal cell phone if I get rid of a landline, etc

I'm also open to competing tablets such as Google Nexus or Samsung Galaxy Notes/Tabs but Apple has great syncing capabilities between devices such as iPad, iPhone and Macs.

I'm not sure why I need to justify it but $800-$1000 for a 64GB-128GB model with cellular possibly is quite a bit of money too and I see that aspect
in her eyes especially if I can't use the full functionality on a day to day basis if we aren't traveling, etc. I know I can use the hotspot on my iPhone4 when traveling but it would be slower than iPad with LTE

So why did you ultimately say you NEEDed rather than WANTed an iPad or iPad mini that a computer couldn't solve at home. I like the idea of holding a device in one hand instead of a laptop on my laptop which is not as portable but way more functional. I can't see an iPad replacing my computer anytime soon at this point.

Some help and advice appreciated?

It doesn't do anything differently than the iPhone or the iPad. And other than Apple using some sly marketing words to describe it: "Remarkable" "Amazing" "Incredible" "Rich, Immersive" "Powerful" "Beautiful" "A concentration of, not a reduction of..."

I guess what I'm trying to ask is.. is there anything that the iPad mini would allow you to accomplish that you cannot do on any other device??

I'm a medical student always on the go. The mini made the most sense and here's why.

It's perfect as a study aid between classes. I can view countless histology slides and anatomy pictures. Carry around dozens of books at a time, that in its physical form would easily weigh 100+ lbs. Prepare presentations on the fly and organize my day. All in a light weight ultra portable device that I can keep in a special inner pocket of my uniform that's always ready to b whipped out incase of emergency .... Or boredom lol. Also it's a lot more discrete in the hospital.
