Why do .jpeg icons load slowly?

I have a PB G4 1.5Ghz with 1.25 RAM.

But, why does it seem like it takes forever for .jpeg preview icons to load?

My previous computer was a 1Gig Toshiba laptop and they were almost instant with that computer.

Is this due to something with the Mac OS?

Yeah, OSX is pretty slow in that regard, and it doesn't create a thumbnail cache file like windows does, so the next time you open the folder after a restart, it has to reload them all again.
