Hello

Quite frequently, random icons in the dock on my MBP will change to the 'default' icon as shown in the screenshot below. The first icon is actually Safari, the second is System Preferences and the third is 1 Password. At some point in the future, these icons will start showing as they should. Can anyone tell me how to fix this myself and stop them from changing?

Many thanks

The colorful-waves-in-a-circle is the Siri Voice Assistant icon (in Sierra). You probably want to just turn off Siri in Preferences.

Sorry I'm talking about the 3 icons that have changed into the blank white sheets with an App Store A in the bottom right. These are all apps that should have their own icons.

Your screenshot is not the right one, it does not show what you are talking about.

I've just checked and the link above takes me to the right screenshot. It shows my dock with 3 identical icons which are a white sheet with an 'A' in the bottom right corner. The apps with these 3 icons are Safari, System Preferences and 1 Password. I want to know why they aren't showing their proper icons.

Ah, missed that, sorry. You might check if those apps have something in common, such as permissions or where they're located.

Different icons change at different times to this 'default' icon. They will randomly eventually change back.

Here is what I see when I click on your link :

It’s always worth checking out the Apple Support Communities and Ask Different, this looks like it might be the same problem you’re experiencing:

The Dock alias may be corrupt. Quit Safari. Control - click on the Dock alias, then Options, and uncheck Keep in Dock. Go to your Applications folder, locate Safari, and drag the application to the Dock.

Safari icon missing

Over on Ask Different there’s a slightly more involved suggestion, I haven’t tested this one so if you try it, proceed with caution:

I had to run the below commands to make my icons come back. It took a while to find, but it finally sorted everything.

sudo find /private/var/folders/ -name com.apple.iconservices -exec rm -rf {} \;
sudo rm -rf /Library/Caches/com.apple.iconservices.store
killall Dock
