Because every iteration further compliments my lifestyle. Once you've invested in a few Macbook Pro's over the past 15 years as well as countless apps/movies/music, you'll realize spending a few hundred a year on a new iPhone is like a drop in the bucket. :)

There's also the thrill factor: I've waited in line on launch day twice. That level of excitement is hard to pass up.

Never had an iphone before but why do ppl feel the need to upgrade to iphone 4, then 5, then 6 when it comes out etc?
There isn't one reason that applies to every single person out there. There are various reasons and even combinations of reasons as to why people upgrade. As indicated in prior replies, many of these reasons apply to all sort of products and not just specifically the iPhone or even smartphones. Think about why you buy new products.

Because I don't want to upgrade every year so I will get the iPhone 4, 5, and then 6. I don't want 4, 4s, 5, 5s, 6 and so on

Besides, are you paying for it?

I'm with the OP.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go hitch up the mule to the wagon and get on down to the general store for some twine and rock candy.

I can sell my iPhone for more than it costs me to buy a new subsidized one. Also I have money to do what I want within reason, and I like electronics.

The reason I get every upgrade is because I can sell my previous iPhone for more than I pay for my upgrade.

Nah, for me it passed being a hobby a long time ago. It's now an addiction bordering on obsession.

I'm getting quite worried :D

Both of the above apply to me. Yeah, it's an obsession, but I sell my year old phone for more than the upgrade costs so it isn't yet a destructive obsession

I know right? it's weird.

Btw I posted this by driving my Ford Model T to a telegram station at which point they attached my post to a carrier pigeon who takes it to a jolly good chap who posts on my behalf.

Only costs me 3 silver pieces and a jersey cow per post.

A guy I worked with until recently was a supposed nerd type who had bought the first three iPhones but stopped after the 3GS (a phone he still uses as his main phone). When I saw him pull out the 3GS I asked him why he was still using the old as dirt phone (took a playful shot) and he said "why should I upgrade? I bought the first three then I asked myself this same question. The iPhone hasn't changed much, it's just more square now." I said are you kidding? I told him about my 5s and how it has a bigger screen, higher resolution, dual core 64 bit processor, 4x the RAM, crazy good camera with dual LED flash, front cam for FaceTime, LTE for data etc....he didn't even flinch.

Some people are just happy with what they have.

Bigger question is why do you car what others do with their money?

I'll bite the troll bate. I upgrade because I can. I can afford the upgrade, I have upgrades to use so why not use them. I keep them sometimes and sell them and make a ton of cash sometimes. Either way we're happy.

Because it's cheap at $200 every 2 years. You should get something because you're paying for a subsidy. Apple and other manufactures improve their phone enough every 12-24 months to make the upgrade worth it. I definitely would not upgrade my laptop every 2 years even if it cost $200 extra per 2 years because hardly anything in the hardware is new except speed.

Yeah guys, why does everybody upgrade? Hell, we should all still be using black and white TV's and driving around in our old classic cars.
