This is one thing Apple really does that frustrates me a TON. I bought an iPhone 4S in November a year ago to try to keep up with "the times." Well, this new iPhone waddles along and plummets the value of my no contract 4S about $100  I no longer had the latest technology. I looked at Apple's website and saw their line that they recycled from the iPhone 3GS' release- "The biggest thing that happened to iPhone since iPhone." Ya right!! I own a first generation iPhone and its minimalism can not be compared. When will the iPhone die already? They just keep adding all sorts of crap that doesn't matter. How often will people ACTUALLY take a photo during a video? So few areas are serviced by LTE where I live that it is no use to me and I think it's INSANE that people feel their phones should be faster than their computers. The way I see it they just made the phone's screen BIGGER which isn't necessarily a benefit. Does anyone else agree that Apple is running out of new innovations to the iPhone? Why did you buy/refuse to buy one?

I bought a iPhone 5 for $199 because my iPhone 4 was starting to slow down and it started breaking down/acting crazy.

You do realize not everyone lives where you live right? LTE has been awesome for me. One of the few areas that isn't serviced by LTE for me is my house, which is fine because I have a 30mb wifi connection. Almost everywhere else I go, I have LTE.

man i remember the exclusivity of the iphones back then... we need it back.

Oh.

Majority of the people are comfortable with the contract system. If you have a contract with AT&T, Sprint or Verizon, the worst decision you can make is NOT upgrade when you are eligible, because $25 or so goes as pure profit into your carrier's pocket (during the 2 year agreement, this money subsidizes your phone).

If you are happy with your unlocked 4s, keep it. THat's what I am doing, but I don't wonder why others upgraded.

I bought all of mine outright, so a little more than $199, but I don't sweat it. Apple resale value is high. What other [technology] device can you use for the better part of a year and still get 80%+ back?

OPs question is absurd it's like me asking why someone would spend $100 to have their nails done.

I read the OP and wondered....

Why has anyone commented on this nonsense?

Then I wondered.....

Why am I commenting on this nonsense?

I was perfectly happy with my old 3GS, but it was getting pretty long in the tooth by the time the 4S rolled around. I didn't buy the 4 on release, but a year later bought a used one for $275 off ebay and that one is still running strong. I would still be using it but my wife's flip phone died, so I gave her my 4 and bought a new 4S rather than get the iPhone 5. I see no reason to get the 5, so I'm good with the 4S until Apple comes out with something better for my needs.

Well, you'll be disappointed by all manufacturers if that's the case. None of them are going to halt product development out of concern for the value of the product that you purchased. This isn't anything new to the tech industry by a long shot.

And there will likely be another phone coming this summer that will lower the value of that 4S even more.

Going by the past few years, once the next iPhone is on sale, the 4S will be the free with two year contract phone just as the iPhone 4 is currently.

is anyone curious what will happen when we get to iPhone 50 or something? Will Apple stop at one point???

lol @ this thread.

why do phones keep getting updated? why does apple keep coming out with new stuff?! why do they keep adding features??!

translation:

"I can't afford a new phone."

Because it's still the best smartphone to date, until the release of the 5S of course...

To me the Op is just not a smart guy to make such a thread. Why does anything get updated or improved.

Now you are just being silly. :p

Because Apple isn't in it to please you, they are in it to make MONEY.

And they make money by selling MORE PHONES. Hopefully I don't have to tell you that if they were still selling the 4S, while it might do ok, it would also be losing customers left and right to every "New" phone that comes out (even if it wasn't the SGS4, someone would come along with something "better").

The idea that Apple should just stop producing new tech because you bought something and don't ever want it outdated is laughable. KEEP it if it's so great for your needs. The ONLY reason why you'd ever need to sell it in the future anyway is if you were upgrading, so why would resale matter to you unless you were?

And if you're upgrading it's because the new phone has something new that you DO want, even if the 5 wasn't it.

If the real reason is that you can't afford the upgrade cycles (which is silly since even with a yearly update the iPhone CRUSHES the competition in terms of retained value...), keep the phone you get or buy a cheaper one to begin with. They have some phones now that they'll PAY you to sign a contract for if you're hurting that much financially.

But I'm sure Apple will stop doing it just because they upset you. So it doesn't matter :p

For $200 and 2 years of life. Why wouldn't you?

In my experience (original iPhone/iPhone 4) the device started to show its age with slowness and getting a new one is cheap. Plus newer games weren't running as well/crashing more. May just be my perception but its what I noticed.

Is this real? Why the iPhone keep being updated?

The same reason we still aren't using commodore 64's. Apps will never be able to get any better if the hardware that supports them doesn't. If YOU don't want to take a picture from a video that's fine (I can't either I also have a 4S) but believe it or not there are other people with different needs and wants.

Finally met the person that thinks the iPhone is moving too quickly. Lol

Great line!
