I can't understand why you wouldn't put a lock on your phone. but then again yes maybe i can J2010

Because there's no one I'm locking it against.. I keep the phone on me at all times.
Like I said, if someone found it, I WANT them to see the contacts.

Or put a passcode on it and make a custom wallpaper containing an alternative number so if anyone does find it they can still ring you.

To be honest it's just not worth it to me for the constant annoyance.
If I lost my phone.. really not much I'm worried about people seeing.

If I DID lost my iPhone, is it backed up somewhere so if I got a new iPhone I could put it back?

Personally if someone found my phone I WANT them to see my contacts so they can contact one of them. There are honest people like me out there who do that when they find a missing phone

Make an image for the lock screen with "If found" or emergency contact info.

Yup when you plug a new one in you just restore from the backup of your old one and it will be exactly how you left it last time you plugged in

LOLLLLLL!!!!! a passcode wont protect ****. DFU mode restore bam phone is gone :p

Yep very true but at least people can't get access to your data. If I don't get my phone back - I can live with it, that's what insurance is for but at least I will know they can't access my data.

Besides privacy I do it because it gives me quick access to make an emergency call. If I had to dial 911 quickly and didn't have the lock screen I would have to hit multiple places to get to the keypad most likely.

Apple needs to address the bug in iOS4 that prevents setting different passcode time intervals when the iphone is reset. Once you reset the iphone you only have the "immediate" option..... this is terrible.

I use a strong encryption password which was setup as a requirement of my companies access option (8 char, mixed number/letter, expiring with non-reuse). Not really a big problem as I am able to set a 15 minute timeout (max allowed by policy) and with voice dialing I'm fine with it.

The only problem I have is that there are times I want to lock/secure the phone and not wait the 15 minutes. I know I can just alter the settings to the immediate lock but that seems like a PITA. I can't find an option to do this. Does anyone know of a key combination or application that will do a "lock now" with password required?

if ever there was dumb question

The one where you unlock the phone by swiping then entering a password.

Seriously how annoying would this get? I'd never do that..

I can understand requiring a passcode after an hour or so but not on the immediate setting.

And how scary is that "erase data" boy.. after 10 failed attempts there goes all your contacst and texts and photos etc..

btw, is there a way to backup my contacts and text messages on my pc?

Really? You can't fathom why someone would want their messages, emails, and photos private? You can't understand that things get lost or stolen or even picked up and snooped at within much less than an hour? THINK!

Where is this backup? Is it just contact info/text msgs etc?

It depends if your on a Mac or Windows computer but iTunes will do everything for you. It backs up everything apart from apps and music etc but they are on your computer anyway so no point - it will just copy them back. Just right click on your iPhone and you will see Backup/Restore. It automatically makes a backup everytime you plug into iTunes to sync

I require a password after 5 minutes and I use the 4-digit and change it every 2 weeks. This prevents my girlfriend from rummaging through my phone when I sleep and finding potentially incriminating photos/browser history/texts.

I'm not that horrible of a person... Am I?

Since you asked...

That depends. Is she hypersensitive, or are you betraying her trust in you? Would you be upset to find out she did the same things as you do?

No reply needed, just something to think about for yourself.

Also, the 10 failed passcode attempts thing isn't via the unlock screen. It's from when you're trying to change the passcode in the settings menu and fail at entered the passcode 10 times in a row.

Actually it is for the unlock screen. If you have the setting Erase Data set in the Passcode Lock settings, your phone will be wiped after 10 failed attempts. However, to make sure someone doesn't come up and just hit it 10 times in a row, Apple built in some security:

- After 6 failed attempts, you are locked out from trying for 1 minute
- After the 7th failed attempt, you are locked out for 5 minutes
- After the 8th failed attempt, you are locked out for 15 minutes
- After the 9th failed attempt, you are locked out for 60 minutes

You can try it right now....I did to make sure it was working. Try to unlock the phone from the lock screen and fail 6 times.....you'll get a red banner with a 1 minutes countdown. After that's up....fail again and the red banner will lock you out with a 5 minute countdown.

I was hesitant to set this on my phone until I learned about the time delays.

People who don't lock their phones are ignorant. Crimminals love you. Don't cry on here when your iPhone is stolen, private info is taken, or when someone sends inappropriate emails and texts to people on your behalf.

When i had my iPhone 3g jailbroken i had the android pattern unlock thing. I like that better than entering 4 digits.

You might have liked it, but it's insecure as your finger trails on the glass would show your unlock pattern - all you'd have to guess is which direction in which to trace.

Like I said, if someone found it, I WANT them to see the contacts.

If the person who finds your phone is honest, they will probably answer you if you repeatedly call the phone.

That is a pretty big IF tho.

This is a very stupid question of only a troll or a really dumb troll.
On that same note, why bother having a pin number on your bank account or have locks on your doors?
