usually if you type it on any apple product I'm pretty sure it will correct it for you. like i just got lion and it will auto correct iPhone even though i just typed it all lower case. it does it on my iPhone too. Usually i don't go out of my way unless it is someone else that would care if it is not right.

iTouch bothers me more then iphone or IPhone.

It's still an iPod regardless so I don't understand why people call it an iTouch. No one calls the other ones iShuffle, iClassic or iNano.

A better question might be: why did Apple (actually their ad agency for the original iMac) come up with a name that's grammatically incorrect?

It's like the naming of the NeXT computer. Cute, but very annoying to type.

The whole weird spelling thing for products is a childish "look at me I'm special" attempt. Sometimes you just don't feel like playing along :)

Heck, just imagine if everyone did it. What if Samsung called their phone the GaLaXy and Verizon called their version the FaScinATe, and you were supposed to remember to type it that way to be "correct". Woof.

End advertising agency tyranny now. Misspell and rebel !!

Hey! Is that a jab at how I named (err, capitalized, to be in context with this thread) my MacRumors moniker?

I'm a gentle hound dog. With just a bit of bark to me. Really. ;)

OP : I'm going out on a limb and guessing because 99.9+% of the time, grammar rules have you putting the capital letter At The Beginning Of The Word.

Seriously, affect/effect is a better thing to get angry at - they're different words!

OK and why do so many say Itouch instead of Touch? annoying yes but not even worth a thread imo.

Even "Touch" is not correct.

Ironically, almost everyone who complains (and I don't mean you) about "iTouch", gets the real name wrong.

It's not "iPod Touch".

It's "iPod touch", lowercase "t", meaning the touch version of an iPod.

That's one good reason why people use iTouch... not only is it easier to type and everyone knows what you mean, but typing iPod touch just seems so weird without the capital T.

A better question might be: why did Apple (actually their ad agency for the original iMac) come up with a name that's grammatically incorrect?

Here's a better question... Why do names such as McDonald have c in lower case and D in capital? Isn't that grammatically incorrect?

That's an interesting observation when applied to human names. Human names usually go back at least centuries. Modern product names don't have age as an excuse :)

In that particular case, Mac = son, as in the son of Donald. (Some families do spell it Macdonald with lowercase "d", though.)

As for Apple products, it could be worse now than the "i" prefix. Jobs wanted to call the iMac "MacMan". We could be using MacPods, MacPads, and MacPhones right now.

The blood curdles.

It's because of how the name is constructed from Gaelic. Mc or Mac means son of, so MacDonald is Son of Donald. In Gaelic, MacDonald is actually MacDhomhnaill.

Oops, didn't see that kdarling had explained it

There's Apple product autocorrect.

There's non-Apple product autocorrect.

Theres's typing with no autocorrect.

For each type of mispelling situation there is a likely explanation related to and caused by one of those various types of autocorrecting mechanisms (or lack thereof.)

If someone types iphone, it means they are not using autocorrect and not bothering to capitalize the P. (Remember, this could be because they are used to having one of their Apple devices do it for them automatically so this may increase the chances that it happens naturally when using a non-autocorrect typing system)

If someone types Iphone, it could mean auto-capitalization on a non-Apple system, or simply, an error such as auto-capping or purposefully capping only the "I" itself and then backspacing and autocorrect not correcting your name as one word but two and leaving Iphone, or heck, even IPhone.

Naturally when a human types fast they are dealing with embedded habits combined with auxilary muscle memory. If one is used to capitalizing the first letters of names or start of sentences, and this becomes a habit, one can imagine the idea of leaving the first letter lowercase (although it's a title) and then having to go ahead and shift-cap that P, becoming a chore. It's easy to imagine it as a commonly occurring stumbling block.

After asking "why?" I believe the answer is quite reasonable and quite indicative of the blend between human nature and The Machines.

A better question is when will The Machines rise and enslave us all...

Because as some of the critics here have shown, we are shamefully far from perfect robots, and we sinfully "just don't care."

We all deserve to be exterminated because of our lack of perfection. Bloody humans... Nothing but sacks of bones and organs, so primitive, so vulnerable.
