Prioritizing 3G over wifi would explain the issue I had yesterday when texting my wife. I am on AT&T and she is on Verizon (company phone). She was talking on the phone at the time and I tried to send her 3 texts (iMessage), all timed out. Verizon not doing data and voice at the same time over 3G might have been the issue. She has wifi available at her office, but she thought she was having issues with that connection. Perhaps she wasn't and it was prioritizing 3G over the wifi.
I know for a fact that if I am on a phone call and my friend sends me a iMessage it just gets sent as a text and I get it.

Mine failed a number of times then eventually offered to send it as text. I have had this happen on different occasions with her, it has not automatically sent it as a text message. Maybe there is an option I have set incorrectly?

I haven't seen someone do it while I am on the phone with someone else but for example last night I was talking ot my girlfriend and also texting my friend at the same time. Usually we iMessage but since I was on the phone we were texting, his responses where fast enough that it did not seem like there was any sort of delay.

Do you have it set to send as SMS automatically if iMessage is not available?

Yes, I just checked my settings and Send as SMS when imessage is unavailable is set to ON. Doesn't make sense why the messages were sent. I got the red exclamation point on all messages I sent to her while she was in the phone.

Your right it doesn't make any sense at all...I will test it out later when I see her to see what exactly happens but I am pretty sure they go right through. I will let you know though.

I had a couple of iMessages to my wife fail the other day for the first time. Had no idea, they were just stuck in sending all day. That eve she asked why I had not replied, and there they were- failed. We are both on AT&T and full bars, as we work in the same city.

Kinda strange. This was the first it had ever happened to my knowledge.

My wife just told me she was having issues with her wifi connection yesterday at work - it was showing connected but she was not able to get any data. Perhaps that was part of this issue - she had a data connection, but unable to get any data. In those cases it might not offer sending a text message.
