Some are using ancient ancient dinosaur appletv’s like older than the HD model and expect it to still work. I don’t get it. I started with the AppleTV 3 in 2016 and have upgraded twice since then. I would not keep the 3 unit and expect it to still work, so why do some people? Why do some keep the first model?

Everyone now pretty much had access to high speed internet with out data caps, everything is streamed.
True. I buy the majority of my movies on iTunes. The exceptions are movies that have special editions only available via blue Ray.

I could not get broadband in my rural location, so I built a large library of ripped DVD's on a Mac Mini and accessed it on two Apple TV3's. Was happy with this for many years, but after getting FIOS I started streaming SlingTV in 2020 which is not compatible with the ATV3. Upgraded to two ATV HD's and still use them. Don't have a 4k TV and am not really interested in getting one, will probably stick with the ATV HD until they stop supporting it.

Use a blue Ray player in your situation.

imagine something 5-10 years old still being functional. throw it in the trash!

Not sure to understand the question but why people keep using old Apple TV? Because they still works?

My mother as her ATV 3 up to 1 week ago. It still working great for her need except one local app/channel she wanted so I bought her a 25$ chromecast and she like it, although there is small glitch once in a while.

Because it works for them. Why do you at all care?

Why should I buy a new when the old is working? Just to pollute this World with Even more electronic waste? Don’t you think there’s some decency in not buying new things when you really don’t need a new one? It also have an optical output that fits my hi-fi amplifier.

Or they could continue doing what they were doing…why spent money on another media player when it’s working as is.

When I had a large library of DVDs and later on, BluRay discs, I ripped them all and saved them on my computer, doing something similar. I still appreciate physical media for times when I don’t have access to the internet, but I also like the convenience of playing the movie from a local network location.

Same reason why majority, not all, keep their PPC and early Intel Macs...

They can't afford to buy a replacement or... their TV's older than their Apple TV box.

Well I have my 2nd gen 720p tv because what else am I going to do with it, stick it on a wall and make art?

it also has an optical out, which can pair with many amps, receivers!

I have my 2nd gen 1080p, as well as the 1st, 2nd, 3rd gen 4K for backup.

Said wall art: + a splash of AirPort Express [Airplay 2 btw] thrown in 😁😁

What a bizarre post / question.

You do realise that not everyone has the same level of disposable income, the same priorities or use things in the same way as each other?

Your question and attitude is exactly what companies nowadays want and one of the many contributors of accelerated pollution of our only earth. Yeah, let‘s keep throwing away working devices just because those are old and cannot run the greatest and latest (which is almost always debatable nowadays). Let’s build our landfill Everest.

Many people have already stated their opinion on this question and I stand by with those willing to keep old but working devices for longer. If companies are willing to destroy the planet (Look at you, Apple), customers at least can do their own bidding and delay the inevitable.

Exactly this!

To that point, I attempted to give my 1080p, and 1st gen 4k models away to friends/family during the pandemic, nobody wanted because they thought it too old 😳

Also, a friend had a 2011 MacBook Pro that they haven’t used in about 5 years, I offered to install Mint on it for them, and/or trade them something and I’d use it. Nope, said it was too old and dumped it at the recycler Last summer. 🤯. They didn’t want to give/barter me junk.

Other than 4K, which many older TVs, and even many current shows, don’t support, what else is there?

I bought an Apple TV years ago and found it nothing short of annoying. The user experience was very lacking.

Why would they upgrade if the older unit still works well enough for what an Apple TV does… streams to a TV.
They do much more than just stream 4K. There is Dolby Vision/HDR, Dolby Atmos, spatial audio, play music, view photos, work as a smart home hub, among other things. Until you have steamed movies and series in 4K with Dolby Atmos / DD 7.1 surround sound, you really don’t know how much more immersive the viewing experience can be. I almost never go to the cinema anymore because I have such an awesome setup at home. I know the total cost can be restrictive for many people, but saying that all it does is stream to a TV is quite naive.
