Interesting! I've tried 5x on my gf's 16 Pro and tbh I loved that. Comparing to my 2x it is night and day in terms of how much I can actually zoom, also portraits turn out wonderful. It doesn't work well in low light but it gets very sharp images of distant objects in good lighting. 17 Pro's upgraded telephoto (or, well, kinda downgraded 4x but with better res larger sensor) is my way to go. I do also use UW from time to time but only in ideal light and just for some fun perspectives.

Kinda tempted to compare actual optical 2x with "optical quality" 2x, it would be fun to see which one wins: cropped 48mp>12mp or actual 12mp
Oh, not that the 5x isn't good, it definitely is. I just find myself at that focal length less than the others. I'm still glad it's there and I get great results with it, and I wouldn't buy a phone without telephoto.

I bought the 13 Pro Max because I wanted the biggest screen and the prettiest model.

Now I bought the Air because I prefer to lose 0.13” screen to have a device that is 75 grams lighter (huge) and it is also the prettiest model by far.

great question…and as someone who has never bought a pro for myself, I don’t see a single reason for it. I don’t care about camera, “premium” material (I prefer aluminum), battery, storage, etc. I’ve gone X, 12 mine, 14Plus, 15 (for USB-C), and might go 17 or Air, or wait. I was tempted by the 16e until I saw no MagSafe. My preferred features:

Lightweight
Magsafe
Not too massive
Single camera
USB-c (now standard)

But my wife needs the pro for all the photos of our animals.

A few reasons I go for the pro:
  • Telephoto camera. I've had that since the 13pro and I'd probably miss it. It's not good on the 13pro/15pro but should be reasonable and usable at 4x on the 17pro for my needs.
  • Raw photo support. This gives you some legs on editing something in Lightroom later if you are caught without your proper camera.
  • USB port is a lot faster. I use it for bouncing files around portable SSDs occasionally.
  • I like the design.

Social Status. Nothing beats the rush I get pulling out that triple-camera flex and putting it to my ear. The looks I get say it all, people instantly assume I’m rich, successful, maybe even untouchable. Single and dual-camera owners? They’ll never understand the sheer power boost of rocking a Pro iPhone. It’s more than a phone, it’s proof I’m the Adonis in the room.

Real reason? I like the better camera system and thats about it I think.

try glasses
I'm 60, wear glasses, and am downsizing from the 15 PM to the 17 Pro. I'd recommend just increasing the font size and or display zoom. For me, that's way better than dropping my phone because it's too big and bulky.

screen size (old and failing eyes and large hands)
battery life - use it a ton for work and GPS when traveling
camera quality
best resale value since I rinse and repeat every year for a tax write-off on new ones.
