Notice both of you you have the 3G. Fingerprints/smudges became a thing of the past with oleophobic coating (especially if you wear it naked in the pants pocket, which self-cleans the screen) and unless you get an oleophobic screen protector, fingerprints are actually worse on films than naked oleophobic-coated screens.

I've owned every generation. Oleophobic makes the grease worse, just easier to wipe away.

Your screen probably has scratches but you probably aren't picky or detail oriented enough to care. For those people who do not tolerate scratches, even the smallest of ones, a screen protector will give them peace of mind.

a girl in my lab scratched the front glass of her new iPhone in the first 3 days by keeping it in her back jeans pocket that had sharp bedazzles or something stupid on it.

I put a zagg full protection on mine just so I don't need to worry about tossing my phone on a desk/counter.

No they didn't. Fingerprints might be reduced but after a days use, with fairly clean hands, fingerprints are def there. They are especially noticeable in daylight.

Apple states that the coating will wear off with use. Wait till a few months from now, those fingerprints will really start to get noticeable.

UNder the right lights, they are nearly invisible but if you really look, you can see all the fingerprints on it now.

Scratches. Some say its not needed, but it doesn't get in the way and it doesn't bother me so no reason not to use it.

My thoughts exactly. I can be pretty anal retentive about things like scratches on expensive items, and I actually like the InvisibleShield's texture, so at least I know that there's no way I can scratch the screen with it on. I don't understand why the anti-screen protector folks like to preach to everyone else about not using them (not referring to the OP, by the way). It's my device and my money.

Makes me sad when I see someone with a protector. Some are low quality or placed improperly or old and need to be replaced and it affects the response of the screen when touched. The person gets frustrated with the iPhone when it's the plastic film's fault.

Whats is "OP" I googled

If you wear it naked in the pants pocket, it's pretty much absent. Put a non-oleophobic film on it, it's even worse.

You edited out "especially if you wear it naked in the pants pocket, which self-cleans it." I do notice fingerprints are worse if it's in a case (where the screen doesn't get a chance to get wiped away by something), as I've seen with my wife's iPhone. However, even she has commented that fingerprints are significantly reduced compared to non-oleophobic coated iPhone.

The coating is still intact in my year-old 3GS. Sure, you'll accelerate it if you're a gamer and consistently hit the same spots on the screen (e.g. fly fishing), but it shouldn't wear off after a year of normal use.

I've had several brands of smartphones, always used screen protectors. Then came iPhone 3Gs with the Oleophobic coating. Since I keep my hands clean, and it's way out of my comfort zone not to use one, I challenged myself to do just that. After a full year the display still looks like new. Truly amazing. I use a clean microfiber cloth at the end of the day, wiping it down is all it takes.

I'm also using my iPhone 4 without a protector.

I use the screen protector so that the screen doesn't scratch. I can place it down on the desk or table with no worries.

After seeing a higher occurrence of threads about a shattered IP4, I opted for the ghost-armor for my wife's IPhone.

I never had a screen protector on my previous models, but I put one one the back & sides of my 4 just for the extra protection. I couldn't stand having one on the front.

I have never noticed that being the case. Perhaps because I see them after I start using it again.

I didn't worry about a screen protector for my 2nd gen iPod Touch. I babied that thing and still ended up with a scratch. I just couldn't bare it if the same thing happened with my iPhone.

I have an anti-glare screen protector because it solves the air bubble issue with the screen cover on the Otterbox Defender case.

That's right. I have a screen protector for my screen protector.

I never got a single scratch on the screen of my 3GS in the year I owned it.

How?
- I did not put in a pocket with keys or change.
- Half the time I carried it in a holster, not a pocket.
- I did not lay it face down on any surfaces.

I followed all of these things too and still had scratches. Not severe, mind you, but they were definitely there. My theory on why? I live two blocks from the beach and sand is everywhere, whether you realize it or not. That's why I use a screen protector. At the end of the day it's still glass and no amount of babying it will always be foolproof.

Because i have a 2.5 year old who is a whizz on the phone but not as careful as me and I like the front without chunks taken out of it.

I can relate!

My boy Zion will be 2 on the 27th and he has been able to "unlock" the phone for a good 6 months now. He gets a bit frustrated with it after closing apps on himself so I must monitor his play with it VERY close.

That being said I haven't gotten a screen protector on my iphone 4 yet. Doubt I will. Cased for sure though.
