If the GM leaks are true, and 7s is really 8 and the OLED 10th anniversary is X,

Why do you think Apple has made the transition?

Maybe the S is hurting sales perception and expectations wise, and people are steering towards the new number models with new designs?

Maybe the glass back, if true, is enough of a physical change to necessitate a number difference and otherwise if incremental, they’ll get back on the S in the next two years?

I think calling the 7s the 8 and OLED the X will add to confusion, people will be calling the X the 8 still because of all the rumor hype with that name for months now And people with an 8 will be told by friends not in the know “not uh, thats a 7s, where’s the 8 with no bezels, I wanna see the 8!”

Like you said the glass back and wireless charging are both pretty big features, especially compared to previous S updates so I reckon that's why they've gone with 8

I would love a glass-like material, without the fragileness

The 4/4s glass sandwich feel is legendary

I have heard people say that they liked to wait for the "s" because that was the more tested and reliable version.

I think it's probably just more of an advertising thing. Giving it a number makes it feel less inferior to the X instead of one model behind. Also Apple is criticised for playing things too safe sometimes and 7s is a very predictable phone name for a 10th anniversary that they want to be exciting.

Im with you on that, the only thing that worries me is the glass is very prone to breaks and cracking even with small drops.
But most likely like before the back glass part would be way cheaper and easier to replace than the front screen.

Mostly it's marketing, the perception (often incorrect) is that S models are less of a jump. That's simply not true though, e.g. Siri first came on an S model. So Apple is changing their versioning to reflect reality.

Who says that they are? This year is kind of a special case, and one instance doesn't establish a pattern.

Nobody's saying anything this is speculation remember ? :p

That's an option I threw out as well, that this is a one-off situation

I’m not sure if they’re done with the S naming convention. I think they regret getting into that routine years back as it became a challenging marketing task to explain how the S models were improvements when they usually looked the same. The media really got more obsessed with how the iPhone looked. S models always had significant internal improvements. Literally the only thing not changing was the exterior.

Having said that, I think this year they’re jumping right to 8 as releasing 3 new phones is going to be very challenging with 2 of them having the potential to look like after thoughts in addition to the iPhone X. I think they really want them to all sound new.

When I think about 2018, with likely 2 OLED models coming, my guess to naming (based on this year’s names) would bring the S back (maybe).

iPhone 8s
iPhone 8s Plus
iPhone X
iPhone X Plus

Or maybe they do move away from the numbers. I can’t see them going past double digits with naming.

I doubt that the "8" line will continue after this year, and I think the "X" line will become "9".

Apple can do whatever they like with calling the iPhones whatever they want. Really can't stop them.

But I know this year's standard models should have the 'S' designation in the name.

Apple doesn't want to call them that because to do so might hurt sales. Apparently they think the masses will be fooled to think this year's (standard) models are something special.

Well...they're not!!!

Good point. And knowing apple, it probably WILL be a shake up over the course of the next few years.

Apple hasn’t stuck with anything consistency wise, in modern history, it feels like.

The new iPad with Retina display, ok guys here’s iPad 4, here’s iPad 5 no wait Air I mean,

Now announcing the iPhone 7-S(o what) and... one more thing... THE 10th ANNIVERSARY X BLOWOUT EDITION

This will be the last year they call it the "iPhone" so you have 8 and Special Edition X....

They will take next year off and the following year will introduce the "Apple Phone"

That would be true for those who paid for their yearly exchange programs. Those of us who skipped 6s and 7 don't really care whether it's a 7s or 8 we are upgrading. It might have enough improvements to skip the discounts on the 7.

I think there is a good chance. Can't afford people to think in the future that a Galaxy S10 is better than the iPhone 9 just because 10 > 9 or that the Galaxy has been there longer.

I'd love to know what they're thinking long-term with this naming. Can only imagine the internal debates over it.

What would your guess for next year be?

I think that the 6/6s/7/8 series design is done after this year.

I think that next year's phone will be based off the "x" and called the iPhone 9, officially making the bezel-less OLED design the mainstream model, and then from there they may go back "s" every other year pattern.

Or maybe next year will be the perfect time to just call it "iPhone" like some have suggested.

Mostly it's marketing, the perception (often incorrect) is that S models are less of a jump. That's simply not true though, e.g. Siri first came on an S model. So Apple is changing their versioning to reflect reality.

Conversely, the S models are typically the iPhones most wait for over the first generation launched, because they are more refined internally with upgraded RAM and other software capabilities, with minor hardware tweaks as well. The naming scheme is nothing more than a differential.

Sure, if you still have a 6/+ still...getting the 8/+ this year will be a sizeable upgrade. Just going from 1gb RAM to 3gb...will be very noticeable.

But it still doesn't change the fact that it's still only an incremental improvement over last year's 7/+.

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but the truth is the truth.

The iPhone 4s and 5s models were some of the best iPhones in history in terms of features added, innovation, quality relative to competitors. The 4S added Siri, the 5s added Touch ID. Those were major feature upgrades. If the "S" name has become a negative, it's only due to lack of innovation in recent years.

TouchID of the 5S and the speed/memory improvements of the 6S are easily as important and noticeable changes as wireless charging.

I think Apple is positioning this iPhone as a generational leap because it is a milestone anniversary year. I don't think it's precedent setting.

Well said. And great points.

The 6s was a bigger update to the 6 than the 7 was to the 6s

People get too wrapped up in S vs not and seemingly forget every year is a new model ID and generation whether the device carries an S badge or not
