Why does Apple sell the iPhone 3Gs?

The answer is so simple. HTC Thunderbolt will cost $250, and with that money, you can buy 5 brand new iPhone 3GS. It's all about market share. You know, flood the market with CHEAP phones to grab additional share. 😀
